Hiking Suikerboschfontein - Part 1 - The Sugar Bush

in hiking •  8 years ago

Directly translated from dutch it's Sugar Bush Fountain and its one of the awesome places I have been to these holidays.

The Sugar Bush is the colloquial name for members of the Protea family of trees.

The name is derived from the fact that Proteas often produce large quantities of nectar in their large flamboyant flowers.

This pic below gives a view of the spreading tree/bush like structure with its dark bark, long stiff leaves and large flowers

A flower just opening

Aside from birds and bees, even ants frequent these flowers for their nectar. These large ants are half an inch long.

A fully opened mature flower.

...at Suikerboschfontein the Proteas are encountered in large thickets found on certain slopes facing certain directions. This is where the micro-climate created by the slope aspect is most ideal for them to flourish.

It is these Protea thickets and the number of fountains that give the farm/area in which this hike takes place its name.

...and a SHOUT OUT goes to @elyaque for his cool badges... try some.

So I am obviously not too old to learn something new? Great Photo's

Thanks, they are not in as sharp focus as I would have liked them, as I had to rely on a back up cellphone due to leaving the "real" camera at home.

Nice pictures and information.

Thanks

Pretty. Almost look like an exotic fruit that I have eaten before, Asian artichoke? : )
