Hiking Suikerboschfontein - Part 20 - Modern Hunters - final.

On the way out from the hike a usual stopping place is Alzu. It's also a good stop to stretch the legs when heading out to the Kruger National Park

It has a major gas station with restaurants and shops, but to further incentive people to stop it is next to a section with a lot of wild animals. They have set up a watering hole right next to the fence and a feeding station.

Rhino's, buffalo, eland, zebra and the like can be seen coming to feed and you can watch the wild animals blissfully going about their business while you eat your meal from the comfort of an air conditioned restaurant.

In the center of the complex they also have a display to raise awareness about poaching.

I have always been fascinated by skeletons and sculls and they have a whole bunch of these on display

A rhinoceros skull

A hippopotamus skull

note the bullet hole, above the right eye

A buffalo skull

an elephant skull

note the bullet hole, lower left

Next to a life size model of a rhinoceros is an assortment of snares used by poachers when not using firearms.

Nice job, does the presence of the bullet holes indicate poaching of any kind to acquire these skulls? That must be a pretty treat to be able to seat in air conditioned rooms. What's the temperature outside?

Thanks for sharing and namaste :)

Typically game viewing in the middle of the day would be a very hot experience and not very successful... this changes all of that.

@gavvet #til what a buffalo's skull looks like, didn't know that that horn extends that far on the skull.
thanks to you!

Its a wonder they don't break off in fights etc. There is some serious bone engineering in those structures

fina bilder thanks

Thanks, I like the pictures too...

It seems to be a good place to rest.
I had never seen skulls like this, very cool!

Yup, its not an everyday sight

very interesting post

Thanks.

Nice post, I also love to stop at ALZU

It is great, kind of breaks up any journey eastwards
