Gjeravica, 2656 m/alt is officially the highest peak in Kosovo (unofficially is Rudoka 2’658 m/alt). It is the second highest peak in the Accursed Mountains (Prokeltije) after Maja Jezerce 2’694 m/alt. The view of the Accursed Mountains from the top of Gjeravica is extremely impressive!
How to get there
There are two main ways to get to Gjeravica peak. The first one is from Junik, a small town near Gjakova and from Deçan, a small town near Peja, but in this blog, I will describe only the way from Decan, since I have made this road before, during the winter. Going to Deçan is very easy. It is located in western part of Kosovo, 15 km from Peja. In Deçan you can find the last Supermarkets, where you can buy something to eat or drink. You follow the road to Deçan Monastery and continue to Deçan Valley, where the unpaved road starts. The only way to go is having a 4x4 car, which is around 17 km. The road ends to some mountain huts, where you can park the car.
About the hike to Gjeravica peak
The starting point is to the mountain huts. The hike begins with an easy hike through a signed path, until you reach the top of the hill. There is the last water source (during the winter time), and the distance is around 1.5 km. After this, you will go uphill to a pass. Going there you can see on your right a frozen lake, which looks amazing! You will reach the top of the pass, from there you will see another pass, to arrive at the Gjeravica lake. There are several paths to go there, but we decided on the left one, because of the snow, I think this is the most difficult part of the trail. When you climb to this pass, you will see the beautiful lake of Gjeravica, which is frozen during the winter. Check out: You will climb the last hill to arrive at the summit, where the views are stunning! On the east side, you can see the range of Sharr mountains, south and west side are reserved for the beautiful range of the Accursed mountains. We stayed to the top until the sunset, for some magic moments. Check out the pictures of the Accursed mountains range, during the sunset: Total distance is 9 km. There is a water source at the beginning of the trail, therefore take around 2 liters of water.
