The designer Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and Gustave Eiffel presented it to the Americans as a gift from the people of France. Every year, millions of tourists visit this place to witness the statue of Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and tabula ansata (a tablet) and broken chains near her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom, and a welcoming sight to tourist and immigrants.
