FATMAWATI sewed the heirloom flag while sobbing

DIRGAHAYU Republic of Indonesia. About 72 years ago, Fatmawati, who was then the wife of Sukarno, was preparing to step out of the door of his house to follow the proclamation of independence on August 17, 1945. But not far off his feet, suddenly there was a cry that they did not have a red and white flag to be flown after the next proclamation.

"Then I turned to take the flag I made when Guntur (the eldest son of Sukarno and Fatmawati) was still in the womb, a year and a half ago. He only knew, one day in October 1944, a Japanese officer suddenly came to Soekarno's house with red and white cloth two blocks away. The fabric was part of the pledge of Japanese Prime Minister Koiso to give independence to Indonesia "later in the day".

Fatmawati actually never intended to sew the flag for the proclamation ceremony. He never thought too, the flag will be a heritage flag that until now stored neatly in the State Palace.

But the flag proved to be very useful when Soekarno-Hatta was about to hold a ceremony of the proclamation of Indonesian independence on August 17, 1945. The situation then made the founding fathers of the Republic of Indonesia busy thinking about the content of the manuscript proclamation and various power transfer process later from the Japanese Colonial Government.

To the extent, they forgot to make sure there was a red and white flag to be flown later after the proclamation was read.
At that moment, the flag of Fatmawati's stitches was immediately issued and flown as an heirloom flag. A flag of red and white cloth taken from the Japanese army building at Pintu Air, Central Jakarta, finally became one of the most historic items for the Republic of Indonesia.
