Sojourner Truth: The Forgotten History of the Slave Who Fought For Women's Rights

in history •  5 years ago  (edited)

The name Sojourner Truth is one of the lesser-known among historical American abolitionists, which is a shame -- her story is one of the most compelling.

She was many things throughout the course of her life. She was a slave, a mother, a wife, an activist, and a preacher. Independent of the consequences, Truth wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed in. She expressed herself even when her surroundings were hostile to what she had to say. She faced adversities far worse than anything seen today, in spite of this, she summoned courage and bravery to realize the potential she saw in expanding liberty. Truth didn’t resign to being a victim of her circumstances either, even when things appeared bleak.

When she decided firmly on a course of action, she was relentless in its execution. We recently published an article chronicling her life as a tireless fighter against slavery and inequal rights.
