On This Day in History - 2nd Feb

in history •  7 years ago

As I forgot to put the date anywhere in yesterdays post, I have put it in the title, just in case I forget again.

So, is the 2nd February a dull and boring day in History? Lets have a look.....

Thanks to History.com, wikipedia, Bing and timeanddate.com for todays interesting facts

1803 - Confederate General Albert Sydney Johnston born - Johnston was considered one of the best Confederate commanders until he was killed at the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, the first major engagement in the West.

1887 - First Groundhog Day - A rather bizarre one, but it was first celebrated in Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, it gets scared and runs back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring.

1901 - Queen Victorias Funeral - The Nation mourned as Queen Victoria was laid to rest.

1922 - Ulysses first published - Dublin born James Joyces novel was published by Paris publisher Sylvia Beach on his 40th Birthday.

1943 - Battle of Stalingrad ends - WWII - The last German troops in the Soviet city of Stalingrad surrender to the Red Army

1979 - Sid Vicious Dies in New York - The Sex Pistols Bassist was found dead in a New York apartment after taking a heroin overdose at a party while celebrating his release on bail whilst awaiting trial for the murder of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen.

1990 - Ban on Anti-Apartheid groups lifted in South Africa - Apartheid was a system of institutional racial seperation in place between 1948 and 1991 in South Africa.

Again, this list is not exhaustive, and quite a few more things happened on this day.
