The octavius ghost ship

in history •  7 years ago  (edited)

This is a lesser known story about the sailing ship called The Octavius.
The story goes like this, in 1761, a sailing ship named The Octavius departed London bound for China.
Octavius safely arrived at her destination, she departed China in 1762, and headed towards the Artic, that is the last her crew is heard from ever again.
It was assumed to be lost along with her crew.
A whaling ship in 1775,called the Herald came a cross the Octavius floating off the coast of Greenland ship looked rusty and frozen.
Boarding party discovered the body of the crew and passengers frozen.
Men also found the ship's captain still sitting at his desk dead frozen, party only took the captain's log before leaving the vessel, there was a log entry from November 11, 1762, thirteen years earlier.
The ship had been adrift for almost a decade and a half, what means that the Octavius completed its strange journey without a working crew.
If the story is true, the Octavius was the first ship to sail through the Northwest Passage.
