In the protectorate, Islam had taken root long before the country came under British rule or influence. Today over 75 per cent of the people in the Gambia are Moslems.

The Moslems are, indeed, a strong force who have played an important part in the development of the Gambia.

Quite early in the history of the Gambia's contact with the Europeans, Portuguese priests started work in the country. But this early missionary work did not survive.

Christian missionaries arrived in the country in 1821. At first they made very little progress. They had to compete with a very zealous sect of Moslems, known as the Marabouts.

Therefore they confined their work to the Colony. In 1823 the French Sisters of Charity started their work at Bathurst.
