The description of Russia, Muscovy and Tartar

The first miniature map of Russia made by the Englishman Antonio Jenkinson.

The map was compiled in 1562, after Jenkins' first journey to Muscovy and Bukhara (1557-1560). The map was part of the Atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum” (Spectacle of the Earth Circle), compiled by the Flemish geographer, cartographer and publisher Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598). Atlas was first released in 1570 and in subsequent years it was repeatedly reprinted in different formats and in different languages. In 1593 Philip of Halle released a pocket version of the Atlas of Athelia. It was from this small-format edition of Pietro Marchetti that the magnificent miniature copies of the cards were engraved, which he issued in a pirated manner in Venice around 1598. Perhaps later this pocket atlas was also reprinted.
