Тhe second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century before the Russo-Japanese War, the Sakhalin Island that happened in 1904-1905 was used by the Russian government as a place of exile for convicts and prisoners.
Аmong the criminal element and just people believed that Sakhalin Island is the most remote place, roughly the way it was in fact up to the western part of the Russian Empire, the main residence in Russia is an island separated by many thousands of kilometers, the island is on the opposite end of the country.
But despite the remoteness of the island, many famous people visited to study the conditions of the life of the convict and their life there on the island. Аnd there are several photos that I would like to show you today.
after the Russo-Japanese War when the southern part of Sakhalin Island departed from the Japanese Empire, the penal colony on the island was transferred to the mainland to the territory. Where is the Khabarovsk Territory and the Amur Region now.
