THE FATHER OF TERROR

He was a French lawyer, solvent, an example of order and rectitude. And when his wife had the fifth child, he died in childbirth and that family father began to change his temper.

Some say that maybe he went crazy. The truth is that he asked his neighbors for money for some business in Germany, he returned, he left again, and one day he did not appear again.

The children of that marriage were divided among their relatives. One of them was called Maximilian: Maximilian of Robespierre.

The history of the French revolution could not be understood without this character, a brilliant speaker of religious education, who was called "The Father of the People".

After the confused events of the French Revolution, Robespierre was gaining space until becoming the highest authority and absolute power.

To achieve his goals, Robespierre stood as the perfect and the incorruptible.

As the most austere and as the guardian of public morals. And he did not hesitate to establish a regime of terror that history can not forget.

None of his friends escaped from the guillotine. Some, by radicals, others, by indulgences, others by suspects of the one or the other. And in the midst of his limitless fanaticism, in his insane attitude, Robespierre went even further:

To acclimate his macabre office, he established that religion was the spiritual foundation of the State.

Then Robespierre decreed the cult of God by decree, and held a party in which he burned a statue that symbolized atheists and atheism.

A regime of terror was established with spies and informers, with thousands of implacable committees throughout France that led to the death of more than 45,000 people a year.

But all power is wearing down and in a moment, under popular pressure, the National Convention ordered its capture.

And that same town that once called him "Father of the People" now demanded his head.

Robespierre was captured, tried immediately, and the next day guillotined with another 21 of his followers.

Thus, at 36 years, the life of the character who had sunk France in terror ended: Maximilian de Robespierre. And he had been born on a day like today: May 6, 1758.
