Pavlos Melas _ Did this hero die for nothing?(Prespes Pre-agreement ,struggle for Macedonia)

Even if i 'm late one day , today i 'll write about Pavlos Melas who died on 13 of October 1904 for the freedom of Macedonia which always was , is and will stay Hellenic(Greek).
This man is a hero of the new Hellenic history as he decided to volunteer and fight for the freedom of Macedonia , where the population had Hellenic Consiusness but was occupied by the Ottomans and claimed by the Bulgarians .

The story of the hero

Pavlos Melas was born in Marseilles, southern France on March 29, 1870. He was one of the seven kids of Michael Melas rich merchant of the era and Hellen Voutsina who was the daughter of another rich merchant of Oddysos .
His family's origins were from Parakalamos Pogoniou of Epirus, where the ruins of the family tower still survive. His family moved to Athens in 1874.
Back then , the main National and political movement was the enlargement of Hellas(Greece) ,in order to conclude the population who was under foreign occupation.
This idea was also supported by Michael Melas and therefore he gave a big part of his fortune for this cause. Pavlos Melas was raised with these patriotic ideas.

In 1886 , Pavlos Melas was introduced in Military Academy and graduated as a lieutenant in 1891.
On February 12, 1897, Pavlos Melas was ordered to go to Larissa with his artillery unit under the command of Prince Nicolaos.
A failed invasion in Macedonia by native Hellenes(Greeks) , gave the Turks the cause they were looking for to declare war on April 18, 1897. Hellas had a total defeat.

He suffered a lot for the defeat and therefore he was from the first who joined the Macedonian Comittee which had the goal to promote the Hellenic influence as a reaction to the action of the Bugarian Comitadians and their blackmales to Hellenic population . Therefore Pavlos, headed to Macedonia on February ,1904with 3 more officers to study the situation from close.

After July , the Hellenic goverment gave him the leadership of the rebel groups acting for the Freedom of Macedonia. On 28th of August he reached Macedonian region were with his group , acted until 12 of October.

Death
After a failed raid on Neret, he headed to Statista . A comrad of Melas there , put the group in 5 different houses.The Bulgarians learned about the Hellenic rebel's group arrival and informed the Ottomans. The village was surounded and during the night of October 13 , Pavlos Melas was dead under unclear circumstances. He was the only dead from the Hellenic side.

Today(2018)

A few months ago the Hellenic goverment signed a pre-agreement with the Goverment of Skopja(FYROM) in which it is allowed to Skopja use the term North Macedonia as their official name and recognisation to a not existant language , calling it Macedonian. They also get some priveleges refering to Energy and Aegean access . At the same time Hellas doesn't gain a single thing from this.

So , is this hero and so many other died for nothing?

Even if this issue is a National matter the Hellenic goverment didn't ask for a referendum if the Hellenic population agrees to these conditions .
Is this a Dictatorship's behaviour or is it just my impression? I 'd like to know your opinion on this matter.
