Today the French people celebrate "Bastille Day" to commemorate the attack on the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789 which sparked the French Revolution. Bastille prison at that time was attacked by revolutionary activists and soldiers who rebel because it is considered as a symbol of tyrant family rule of the Bourbon kingdom.

The attack on the Bastille prison was the culmination of a decade-long political turmoil that toppled the French monarchy. In the summer of 1789, the atmosphere of the revolution was already felt in France. So Bernard-Rene Jordan de Launay, Bastille military governor feared that the prison would be targeted. As a result he requested assistance granted by the government on July 12, 1789 by sending 250 barrels of gunpowder to the Bastille.

With this powder inventory, De Launay withdrew his men into the prison as well as the fort and raised two bridges. In the early hours of July 14, 1789, a crowd of armed guns, swords, and various homemade weapons began gathering around Bastille Prison. De Launay's troops could initially repulse the masses, but the number of residents who surrounded the Bastille grew.

Finally, De Launay's troops could no longer survive and he was forced to wave a white flag of surrender. The mob then arrested De Launay and his men and seized gunpowder and a number of cannons and freed seven prisoners. De Launay was then taken to Hotel de Ville, where he would be detained and convicted by the Revolutionary Council. Unfortunately in the middle of the street the angry mob catch and then gang up De Launay to death.
The capture of Bastille prison was a symbol of the end of the ancient regime and gave the French revolutionaries a momentum. In 1792, the revolutionary group impregnated the monarchical system. Then a year later King Louis XIV and his wife Marie-Antoinette were put to death by beheading by guillotine.
