July 18, 1948 - Formula 1 debut of Juan Manuel Fangio!

Important day for Sports History

On July 18, 1948 the famous Juan Manuel Fangio made his Formula One debut. His debut took place in France at the Grand Prix de l’Automobile Club de France in Reims. Juan has been born in 1911 and is the most successful Formula 1 Racer in South America and he was involved int he early days of this racing series. He actually dominated the first decade in F1 becoming World Champion five times. His record was unbeaten for 47 years until Michael Schumacher took over the record. Fangio won the championship with four different cars:

  • Alfa Romeo
  • Ferrari
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Maserati

Fangio was a special and dominating driver during his time . Often it seemed he could win easily without having to push to the limit, mainyl as he also had the best cars usually. However he proved his racing capabilities in the famous 1957 German GP which was his comeback race where he was able to break the lap record numerous times, just after a larger break of racing.

After his active career he was the honorary president of Mercedes-Benz in Argentina. Juan died in 1995.
