Take it from a historian: if you ever visit Prague, you have to see this astronomical clock.
Prague?
Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, in eastern Europe. It's a city which a rich past and it's an excellent citytrip for those who look for a historical city centre with great and interesting buildings. And let's not forget the magnificent bridge over the river Vltava!
The astronomical clock
The must see spot in Prague is it's astronomical clock. It's next to the old town square.
It has 3 parts:
- the position of the moon and the sun, together with other astronomical information
- a calendar with the months
- The Walk of The Apostels
The walk of the Apostels
This part of the clock is a tourist attracting that you can see every hour. The puppet representing Death will strike the time while the Apostels are shown. You can also see 4 figures alongside the clock representing vanity, greed, death and lust.
It's worth your time to stand in front of the clock while visiting Prague. Because when the bell strikes the astronomical clock is nicely animated (but don't expect a firework-show). And be on time, because a lot of tourists will stand in this spot.
The history of this clock
The oldest part of the clock dates back to 1410 (2010 was the 600th anniversary). A legend says that the clockmaker Hanus was blinded after finishing this masterpiece, so he can never built another clock in another city again.
The figures were added in the 17th-18th century.
