in history •  7 years ago  (edited)

One of the world's most notorious criminals of the 1920s and 1930s, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion and fined $80,000, on this day in 1931.

Born Alphonse Gabriel Capone in 1899 in Brooklyn, New York, to Italian immigrants. He joined a gang at the age of 14 after being expelled from school and earned the nickname “Scarface” after being sliced across the cheek during a fight.

Capone moved to Chicago in 1920, where he started out working for crime boss Johnny Torrio.

Al Capone was involved in illegal enterprises, which included alcohol-smuggling, gambling and prostitution. His arrest in 1931 signaled the downfall of crime's biggest boss.
