Vlad Țepeș AKA Vlad Dracul (Dracula) AKA Vlad The Impaler was born in Sighișoara, Romania between 1428-1431.
From a very young age Vlad was destined to rule Wallachia. Upon the death of his father & older brother Vlad became a potential claimant to Wallachia. He accompanied John Hunyadi and launched a campaign against the Ottoman Empire in September 1448.
In his opponents absence, Vlad broke into Wallachia at the head of an Ottoman army in early October. He accepted the fact that the Ottomans had captured the fortress of Giurgiu on the Danube and strengthened it.
The Ottomans defeated Hunyadi's military in The Battle of Kovoso between Oct. 17-Oct. 18th. Hunyadi's deputy, Nicholas, urged Vlad to come to meet him in Transylvania, but Vlad refused. Vlad returned to Wallachia at the head of the of his remaining army. Vlad was forced to flee to the Ottoman Empire before December 7th 1448.
Vlad the Impaler also fought against the Muslims to protect Christianity and stop the spread of Muslim religion throughout Europe. Although Vlad was not Catholic he was supported by the Pope.
Vlad ruled in his castle (Bran Castle) situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia.
Vlad would often capture his oncoming threats, and impale them on wooden stakes in the court yard, so other invading armies would see and know what would happen to them if they dared to come further. Some did, until the smell of the rotting bodies in the court yard became so over-whelming that invading armies would have to turn back.
The Legend of Vlad Dracula being a vampire started when he would ask for the blood from his impaled victims, and would put it in a bowl. Vlad would dip his bread in the blood and eat it, leading people in modern day to believe he was a vampire.
It is because of this that Bram Stoker got the idea for his classic novel 'Dracula'.
The House where Vlad was born in Sighişoara, is now a tourist attraction. Tourists can choose to dine there, enjoy a beverage or even visit the very room where Vlad was born.
It is said that Vlad the Impaler died a terrible death. It is believed that Vlad was "mistakenly" decapitated by one of his own men in battle, between December 1476-January 1477.
Historians believe that Vlad's remains were buried under the first church of the Comana Monastery (which had been est. by Vlad)
