A plaque on a wall near Smithfield, London.

How long have I been passing this wall without really noticing what it contains? Probably more than a year now, but before I was only working once a week in this area. Plus, working out of hours doesn't really give me time to linger here as either no one is about in the morning and in the evening, the pubs are full of 9-5 merry people having a drink.

Who is William Wallace?

Reading what's in the plaque, a painted face of Mel Gibson came to mind and rows of proud arses pointing to the sky! Yeah, that scene lingered till now.

As one of the main leaders in the war for Scottish Independence, in September 1297, together with an Andrew Moray, Wallace defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.
He was appointed guardian of Scotland and served until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk in July 1298.

Betrayal

His capture in 1305 was brought on by another Scottish knight who was loyal to King Edward I of England who turned him to the English soldiers in Robroyston near Glasgow. Brought to London, he was tried for treason and crimes against English civilians.

His famous words were " I could not be a traitor to Edward, for I was never his subject".

A shield below the plaque.

As inscribed in the plaque: His example of heroism and devotion inspired those who came after him to win victory from defeat and his memory remains for all time a source of PRIDE, HONOUR and INSPIRATION to his countrymen.

A very brave man who fought for his country and a HERO who fought against injustice and tyranny. His life can also serve as an inspiration to anyone in the present world, who wants liberty and freedom from any oppressing forces that is still present today.

Freeeedom!!! Oh lord. We love William Wallace up here and not just after Braveheart either. You can reduce a scotsman to tears by talking about him.

Therea re a few books that describe his life. He is also mentioned in passing in many Scottish history books. Ah. Good old Williiam Wallace. They had a statue at Stirling Castle which they eventually had to remove because it looked like Mel Gibson and the scots were outraged lol. Fabulous post, and fabulous tag at the end!! :O)

a Mel Gibson look-alike in Stirling castle??? that's ridiculous, a good thing they removed it, the real William Wallace would be turning in his grave!
thank you for checking it out, kept removing your tag and always its still there :))

I am happy its there, Its my first tag!

there's always a first hey? u can tag the next ones lolss

Wallace was one of the truly fascinating characters in Scottish history. After seeing the movie, I started reading everything I could find about him.

Did you find much? it's only the wikipedia ive got the reference from.

Not much online, but at my local library. There are a few videos on Y-Tube.

i should have checked youtube :)

This guy (Tony Robinson) is really good.

He is.

Robert the Bruce, you traitorous little shit. Shame on you..

it said john de menteith turned him on..was it robert the bruce???

De Menteith may have betrayed him also, but I know only of Robert the Bruce's Judas-like actions.

Though, I am basing this solely on the movie Braveheart, so who knows how accurate that is. Lol.

I was born in Scotland and live here now, so perhaps I should know more on the subject, but sadly I do not. It's hard to invest much trust in history anyway, because as it says at the start of that very movie.. "The victors write the history books."

Great movie though..

the movie was great thu every true to life movies are sensationalised..even in books ;)

You live in Scotland? Why aye, wherabouts? Glasgow here!

I have only been here a few years, as I grew up in England.

But, I know Shawlands is very close because I used to go over there often to see my ex.

I wonder who else I have talked to on here that is Scottish now. A potential SteemFest-Scotland might be on the cards..

There were two other guys, one was eightballrad I think and another was the most prolific poster ever. I cant remember his username. He broke the 10000 comments barrier by manually writing comments. He was a nice guy but left after posting one too many plagiarised articles.

I have been tempted to call out in a post to see how many there are but always feel worried that there will be zilch!

A scottish steemfest, thats sounds rer!

Glasgow too!
Maryhill.. You?

HA, no way. Shawlands on the south side. I lived in Maryhill a few years ago!
