Merida, is a city that has that ability to tell you the story through its streets; It was founded almost 500 years ago by Francisco de Montejo, on the remains of the Mayan city known as Thó, which they say was already uninhabited when the Spaniards arrived in this area.
Little by little, convents were built using stones from ancient Mayan archaeological sites. But the most representative example of this era is the Cathedral of San Ildefonso, the first built on land signed by all of America, built between 1562 and 1599. On the main altar there is a work in wood known as "Christ of Unity", considered the largest wooden image under roof that exists in the whole world.
