Baskets And Vintage Photos Of First Nations Weavers

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I've been showing some of the favorite basket designs that I ran across while doing research for my series on Herman, the white Indian boy.

I'm so amazed with the intricacy of the designs and even more so when I see vintage photos of the basket weavers doing their work in primitive conditions... practically in the dirt, and yet they're producing fantastic works of art!

But them I'm just a simple country boy so I reckon I'm easily impressed. lol.

The secrets of their methods were passed down from mother to daughter for centuries and families would compete with each other to see who had the best designs. The best of the master basket makers were highly honored.

Sometimes they beaded over the baskets although I've only seen a couple of those. Here's one on Ebay that is vintage and they're asking $700 for it, it's real small, like 4 inches across.

Here's a lady from the Karuk tribe weaving baskets, this is probably in the 1880's:

The tribes made what is commonly known as "burden baskets." Some tribes like the Pima made them with a strap that went around the shoulder as these two women demonstrate as they go out to gather seeds.

The Apache style had a strap that went on your head like so:

Or like on this woman. Her's has a great pattern but it kinda gives me a headache looking at it but she looks like she can handle it!:

As you can see, they used baskets all the time in their everyday life and work. Here's a woman grinding corn into meal and she uses three styles of baskets. And look, she must be enjoying her work because it's only the second time I've ever seen an Indian female smile in a photo:

This is a Paiute woman basket weaver in Yosemite National Park, September 16, 1933. What a magnificent piece of artwork!

Here's another magnificent vintage basket in excellent condition:

This is such an interesting old photo. There wasn't a date on it but I noticed the Lucky Strikes Cigarettes box in the left hand corner and those cigarettes came out in 1905 so this photo was taken after that.

I'm guessing it's from the 1910's or 20's. But look at that big basket on the right hand side, I wish I had a better view of that one.

There ARE a few modern day basket weavers like this lady, but not many:

Sally Black is a Navajo basket weaver and you can purchase her amazing baskets and trays at hoelsindianshop.com. Here she is with one of her trays. This particular one sells for $1,200.

I'll close with one of my favorite Western artists, Zhou Shu Liang, who painted a basket weaver, of course:

Such a beautiful art, i really enjoy the photos and the story:) Unfortunaly i ve seen it in my country also, old forms of art are dying.. but sometimes the next generation pick things up and create beautiful things based on these old techniques:)

Howdy sir georgeboya! Yes, lets hope the younger generations take an interest in it and revive the old artwork and crafts. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Hope you are having a good Sunday, Cowboy? How’s the weather in Texas?

Great collection of photos, I especially like the fourth photo with the lady weaving baskets and her little child there.

I noticed some women were wearing little round hats. I didn’t know that was a custom.

Beautiful art work on the baskets. Good to hear the basket weaving is still going on. I can’t imagine how they got the different colors throughout them.

Howdy redheadpei! The weather here was heating up in the 90's but now a cold front and storms are moving in and it's downright chilly but feels very good. Great sleeping weather and won't have to run the air conditioning. Do the homes up there have air conditioning or are the summers too short to bother with it?

The women with the woven hats, yes I didn't know about those either but several different tribes were wearing them so I guess it was a thing.

Sometimes they stained the basket designs and sometimes they wove different colored material in to make the designs. All I know is, the skill level is beyond my comprehension!

Good day janton, if I was carrying a basket on my back I would make sure that the straps made it as comfortable as possible! I wonder how effective the straps are around the shoulders and head?
ps: I really hope the basket weaving remains an art. They are very beautiful.

I think they will remain but I think the very detailed, complex ones and the methods of making those are lost forever. I hate the thought of either of those basket styles, they would both hurt and be bad for your back!

Sadly, the indigenous women had no option in the centuries gone by. It would be interesting to find out how their backs stood up to long term carrying off the baskets.

Howdy today angiemitchell! I would love to know that too. Unless they had much stronger backs back then I think they would all have troubles when they got older.

Howdy annephilbrick! I'm so glad you like them, I agree, I'm amazed at the pottery and the basket weaving. Could you walk around with a big pot on your head like those women?

Hello...!! :D
@janton
I wouldn't even attempt to. I would be totally devastated if I dropped it.
I do so dearly admire and respect their strength . Amazing women..!!!!

lol! I know what you mean, they're carrying around works of art that took someone days(at least) to make!

Thank for sharing and sourcing such interesting images @janton I wonder how long it takes Sally Black to weave those gorgeous baskets?

Howdy again Trudee! Good question..I bet you can have a good conversation with her if you buy some of her baskets!

I would love to have a good conversation with her and come away with a lovely basket. 😊

I agree, me too, I'd like to come away with a car load of baskets!

These baskets and their maker always blow my mind! I would love to watch how they actually do it, because I can't wrap my mind about that, lol. And I am really glad that they are still some artists alive who continue this brilliant work!

Yes I agree, it freaks me out when I see the very complex, tightly woven baskets from the 1800's. Those are the ones that aren't being made anymore and that's one reason they cost so much. Most of them are in glass cases.

I feel the same way! Absolutely mind blowing!

I do not cease to admire these old photos !!!! how wonderful that these photos have survived to this day !!! I see that modern women from Indian tribes dress in the same style as the women in the photos

Howdy tali72! Yes the old photos are very fascinating, I'm so glad you appreciate them and the women do have the same style clothes.
