Captured by the Blackfeet: Part 2steemCreated with Sketch.

This picture has nothing to do with this particular story, I just like paintings of Mountain Men!

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas! I'm continuing with my short series about an incident that happened to one of our most famous Mountain Men, Sam Minard.

eo119pzyj6.png
To recap yesterday's introduction post: the time is the early 1800's, the place is in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, in the winter time. Sam's decision to free a pair of large Elk who were trapped by their own horns interlocking had taken his attention and alertness to his surroundings away and he had been surprised by a war party of Blackfeet who he was forced to surrender to.

The Blackfeet and Sam were mortal enemies as he had scalped and killed a number of them in previous fights.
eo119pzyj6.png

Sam was filled with rage and regret but was helpless to act without certain death so he reluctantly raised his hands while a group of Blackfeet warriors trained their rifles on him.

A large, well muscled brave, fierce looking, standing over 6 feet tall with the headress of a subchief lowered his rifle and walked toward him. The chief stared at Sam, coming a foot from his face, his dark eyes glaring under the black war paint. Sam stared back with cold blue-gray eyes.

This is probably similar to the war paint that the Blackfeet wore, this is one example of Blackfeet paint:

The Chief gathered spit and spat full on into Sam's face. Sam felt a rage run through him from head to foot. He could easily grab the Chief and break his neck but then he would be felled by the rifles.

Chief unsheathed Sam's knife and unbuckled his gun belt and threw them behind him. The other braves came forward and began shouting and dancing around Sam.

This was a great victory for them, they had captured the mightiest of the Mountain Men and enemy of their people so they danced and shouted with much glee and gloating while Sam stood with his arms crossed, motionless...and began to think.

Sam assesses his situation

He reckoned there were almost 60 braves. He knew from previous incidents what was likely to happen to him. The Blackfeet were very good traders and negotiators and enjoyed getting a large ransom from the Crow for captives.

They would demand guns, ammunition and other supplies. The Crow would take captives like Sam or native enemies and extract revenge on them by torturing them to death over a period of several days.

But he didn't think he would be seriously wounded or harmed by the Blackfeet because that would lesson his value to the Crow.

The braves continued to dance for some time, individually coming up to him gesturing with their knives or tomahawks but the Chief kept them in check.

The party prepares to leave

They bound his hands in front of him with thick leather thongs and attached a 30 foot leather rope to the thongs and tied that to the horn of a saddle.

He didn't see any of them even glance at the Elk. When they were mounting up and getting ready to leave Sam yelled at them and motioned to them to free the Elk.

The Chief walked over and examined the interlocking horns and gestured that they had enough meat, that they would leave them to the wolves. This infuriated Sam as he couldn't stand the thought of leaving such noble animals to a slow and agonizing death.

Sam shouted and cursed and gestured. The Chief then summoned a pair of warriors to the Elk who put them out of their misery by shooting them in the base of their skulls.

The march begins

The group then mounted up, except Sam who walked behind the horse whose leather rope he was tied to. The snow was knee deep. He knew they would keep him alive but aimed to weaken him by marching him all day.

Whenever he would attempt to bend down to scoop up some snow to quench his thirst the big brave leading him on the horse would violently jerk the rope and prevent him from getting any. Sam was enraged but convinced himself to stay calm.

He studied the brave's features as well as the Chief's. He committed them to memory and swore to kill them after he escaped.

He was hoping they would stop to eat but they didn't stop all day. Occasionally one would leave his spot in line, break off a branch and ride up to Sam, striking him in the face with a cutting, stinging blow. Blood trickled down his forehead and beard.

First night encampment

Sam had a 5 gallon jug of Rum on his pack horse and he was praying that they'd get into that Rum but the Chief was smarter than that. They didn't stop until midnight that first night.

They tied the rope to a tree and allowed Sam to sit down with one guard watching him. He was soaking wet and sitting in snow. The party still didn't touch the Rum which was Sam's only hope at this point, for them all to get drunk. But the Chief was disciplined and wasn't allowing any drinking.

He could easily take out the guard in front of him, especially if the guard fell asleep, but that wouldn't do him any good unless the rest were drunk.

Oh good, dinner!

While the party had a fire going and were eating, one of them brought Sam a cup of steaming..something..some type of soup. It looked nasty but Sam needed every bit of nourishment he could get. He thought it had bits of owl or crow meat in it. He gulped it down as fast as he could.
eo119pzyj6.png
Some tribes enjoyed giving their white captives nasty food with hair, crickets, beetles, ants and such in it and to watch their reactions to the gross stuff. (there were also tribes that were kind and helpful and worked with the Mountain Men and white traders.)

It was a form of entertainment to them but Sam determined that no matter what it looked or smelled like he was going to down it and give no expression.
eo119pzyj6.png
With no chance of escape on this night he laid down. He had to get some sleep and conserve as much strength as he could. He needs to attempt an escape in the next 24 hours, whether it's suicidal or not, while he still has some energy.

Sam's story continues on the next post.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

howdy ocdb and thank you for the upvote and for helping so many!

Poor Sam...It looks like a hopeless situation unless the warriors get into the rum.

Well they will at some point so we'll see what happens, it depends on how many days it takes to get to the village. thanks so much for reading and commenting!

I'd like to flash back in time, for only an instant, and stare back at the chief while he looked at Sam. That must have been a powerful sight to see.

Poor deer. I'm still sympathizing :)

howdy tonight ginnyannette! what an honor, a rare comment from the recluse herself! lol.
Oh, I know, that would have been so powerful but I think it would have been very scary and ferocious looking. Not to Sam, he had no fear. Yeah the treatment is pretty brutal to think about, he was a good man to, honorable.

This is turning into quite a story! And I had never heard of this guy before. I do learn a lot from you!

Well most people don't know any of the Mountain Men, they aren't famous like the famous cowboys or outlaws but he was one of the most famous and with some interesting tales! Thanks for the kind words!

I know Jim Bridger and Kit Carson and what's his name Colter, I have read about them but this guy-his name doesn't ring a bell to me at all!

Well you know more than probably 99% of the people then! But I guess that's not hard to do these days. lol. Is tomorrow the day that everything happens so you won't be on here?

Yes... Busy day tomorrow. I should have more time to be here by noon on New Year's Day.

I think that spending time in Wyoming.... And reading... And enjoying history all contribute to my mountain man knowledge. I'm continously amazed at what people don't know.

haha! very true, people know next to nothing! ok well have a wonderful day tomorrow, I know it's going to be great!

Hrm. Bits of hair and bugs sound a lot like the food we used to have in the school cafeteria back in the day.

haha! surely not sir fotosdenada! surely not...right?

Howdy steemitboard! thanks for keeping tract of all my stats for me!

Wow, what do do in a situation like that. Sam seems like a genuinely tough guy. Would love to see a movie about mountain men

Howdy sir badger! Yes, there hasn't been one out since Jeremiah Johnson, have you seen it? Fantastic movie. yeah Sam's as tough as they come.

Yeah, what a good movie. Back when movies had substance

Posted using Partiko iOS

ha! yes sir badger I agree. Back when movies weren't mostly digitalized action. You have good taste in movies!

I hope someone will track this company and help him at the right time!

Posted using Partiko iOS

Howdy again sir kaminchan! I doubt if that will happen but we will see. They could make movie out of this guy's whole life because it was very exciting! Thanks for reading and commenting!

I suppose I will have to wait till tomorrow now. Obviously he gets away otherwise there wouldn't be a story.

hey don't ruin it for people who don't realize that! lol. Very true. It will be one of the few stories I tell where the main character doesn't die!

Howdy there steem-plus and thank you for the upvote!

Sam's controlling himself and staying focused on problem solving. I think he will find a way to escape. It looks like he wouldn't miss or pass up an opportunity.

howdy today squirrelbait! no he wouldn't miss a chance that's for sure. Even if he thinks it's useless but he could get free enough and get into a situation where they'd be forced to kill him or he could get a knife and kill himself that's what he'd do. thanks so much for commenting! I suppose your partying tonight is going to be as exciting as your Christmas partying?

Oh yeah! You know it!!! I might spice it up even more this time by doing some more research into Smart Dust. That crap is real!! LMAO!

Don't get so wild you get arrested tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!

haha! get arrested tonight and Mrs. J would have me where she wants me! lol.. you know where she works right? I've told a few people but I can't remember all of them.

We're such party animals aren't we? lol. Some youtube videos, is that research or just leisure activity?

Oh my gosh, what a cruel Indians!!!

howdy again Miss Lena! Well I was going to say to you that to them it wasn't cruel, just the right thing to do but last time I said that to you then you said the people had no excuse so I won't say the same thing this time. lol. But they did think totally different with a totally different culture based on honor and courage.

The problem is, what they considered honorable and what the white men considered honorable were two different things. But both races did cruel things to the other.

I am not looking at things from man's perspective Janton; you should know that by now.

that's true. I understand. Hey, what are you doing on here? don't you have any New Year's parties to go to?

I am glad you do! No parties! Those days a long gone, lol. What about you?

No parties? Are you saying you can't stay up late anymore? lol. Well Mrs. J has been on third shift and she is off tonight but is exhausted so she'll probably go to bed early and I'll probably work on steemit until 2 am, that's what I usually do. So no, no special food, drinks(unfortunately) or anything. Just a couple of boring dinosaurs! lol.

Join the club Janton; I am dinosaurs too, lol. I stay up watching Big Bank Theory, old episodes, because new ones are not out yet, lol. Also Young Sheldon. By the way, are you familiar with that show? It is happening in Texas.

haha! yes you have good taste in shows! I like Young Sheldon, it's great.

Hi @janton im sorry, i don't comment on your writing, it's just that i want to say "Happy new year" hopefully in 2019 get the best for us. 😊

Success for you in 2019

Howdy there esteemapp! Thank you so much for the excellent platform!

That's a good one @janton. I'm a little behind, but I'm dying to know what happens next, and I know part three and four are already out there. Heck, I even resteemed part four but I've haven't read it yet :) I'm heading to part three now!

oh thank you sir Keith for the resteem. I'm glad you like the story, I'll try to keep it interesting!

One tough Mountain Man.
The soup sounds like something out of my cookbook, sounds like a winner for #fff.

hahaha! An entry for fff! lol. Oh that's funny, that's a good one. Yeah the soup is a mystery to me. I don't know if they were trying to make it bad or that's just the way they ate it and it was bad just to the white man.

Sounds like a pretty grim capture. Best bet would be to try and escape in this stage, rather than getting further on down the line and being traded.

Howdy sir preppervetuk! yes sir, he knows he has to make a move while he still has strength, right on.

Captivating story, loving this series Lord Janton! Look forward to seeing how the rest of the story pans out! Looks like this was a popular one as well, should keep Baroness from wielding the axe for the time being lol. At least you have your balls back from getting a new laptop :D

Howdy sir nickyhavey! thank you for the kind words, I do like this period of our founding of the West. Or maybe I should say our vicious, ruthless takeover of the West, it's not like there already wasn't people here!

But anyway, it has got some positive reaction but no money until I started buying votes! I just got my new computer set up last night, it's a powerful desktop, more of a gaming machine with large capacity and it's working beautifully so far. Thanks again for the kind words...sometimes you're not half bad for a stuffy Brit! lol.

I'd go with the vicious, ruthless take over 😉

You decided to play the "if I can't beat them" card then? Shame really, I thought you were better than that Lord Janton lol 😁 just kidding of course.

Glad you are enjoying the pc upgrade. A gaming pc will keep you powered for many moons I'd imagine! Unless you do live streaming of your video game playing!

Posted using Partiko Android

haha! well sir nickyhavey the reason I went with the vote buying is that I was never able to attract any attention of anyone big on my posts, mine just aren't anything special so I wasn't really expecting to, and curie don't like them because none of it is original material.

Meanwhile I've seen person after person constantly get curied and zoom past me in rep scores, which is fine, I'm happy for them, OR people just buy the votes and zoom past me in rep scores. lol.

So I got tired of everyone sky-rocketing up to the 60's while I was stuck in the 50's so I decided to do something about it. It's going to be short lived though because I don't have much steem and those votes are expensive. But at least I'll finally be in the 60's.

I have no fantasies about catching the great nickyhavey but at least I'll be in the 60's with him until he hits the 70's!

Nonsense Lord Janton, you make interesting, informative and amusing posts in your newly found Texan tongue! It's a shame that anything historical won't get upvoted then if that's what you're saying because a lot of lessons can be learned from the past. Why not reward the time spent to research it and present it in an educational and entertaining way?

That person can't have been me then, I only got curied once and it will never happen again haha, never bought an upvote, never will.

Good for you for doing something about it but if it's just about increasing rep, then it's sad that it can just be bought and not earned the old fashioned way. If it's financial then I heard bots will cost more money then you put in, but I don't know enough about them!

Haha, you're already in the 60s Lord Janton, don't sweat and 70 is impossible for me if I don't pay for bots so I will probably be floating around here for a while. What's the highest rep someone can get? I thought it was 75 but have seen 83 in some cases! What is this wizardry?!

Howdy sir nickyhavey! I know, the rep number should be about earning it, not buying it(like I'm doing!) lol. But I wanted to get a boost so I did but it's very temporary. Yes I've seen Haejin's 83 rep score but he earned it it seems, by posting 15 times a day or whatever and having a huge account.

When I go to the site where I buy the votes I see many leaders spending 40 steem per day, which is the limit, to boost their rep scores so it's just buying them and it doesn't mean as much now.

The next highest I've seen is 78, I've seen two of those. papa pepper is one and is the most prolific poster I've ever seen because most people posting multiple times per day just post a few sentences or a photo but he posts actual, full posts with videos, I have no idea how because he has so many other projects and accounts on steemit like his homesteading store.

You should easily be able to get to 70, why do you say it's impossible? just keep cruising the way you are and you'll be there in a few months.

I think the chances of getting more curie's are tremendous when you start posting travel videos again.

My new found Texas tongue? No I don't have a new found Texan tongue, I have the same Kansas twang that I've always had though! Not as good as the Texas tongue but that's the way it is. lol.

Hey Lord Janton. Kinda makes the rep system pointless then doesn't it?

I try and do a daily music post but when that's intertwined with a day job, a new music project/community I'm co-founding (and launched recently), it makes it hard to do anything more! Besides, the non-music blog posts don't fetch me more than $1 on here. Good job I am not doing it for the money Haha!

A Kansas tongue that the Baroness cuts off if the Lord steps out of his box? Haha

Posted using Partiko Android

howdy sir nicky! yes sir about the rep system. Someone the other day said that it is just a measure of how much someone has spent on votes! and for some that's true. But it's the system they have, kinda late to change it. If they did away with voting bots then the people who are trying to catch the leaders who are using bots would be super pissed! lol. it's a nutty system.

I still think you don't have to worry about it because of how well you do with the music guys votes. you got it made dude, just keep cruising!
Yes about the Baroness, she keeps me on a short leash! lol.. which I need!

ps- oh I forgot to say that I don't play any video games and don't use my computer for anything but a little research and steemit so this thing should last for many years!

That should last you until the end of time Lord Janton Haha! No danger of that processor being overused at all!

Posted using Partiko Android

That's what my plan is, I don't even take any pictures hardly. I bet you have a world-class computer don't you?

Haha well the world needs more Janton selfies lol! Of course I have a world class computer, can't have anything less. Now it's owner just needs to be world class and there won't be a mis-match any more haha

Posted using Partiko Android

howdy today sir nickyhavey! hey you're giving the Brits a bad name, being all humble like that. No pompousness there?

It forces me to disagree with you and I strive to be an agreeable person on here! lol.
