How A 15 Yr Old Girl In Florida Received Emelia Earhart's Last, Chilling Radio Transmissions

in history •  5 years ago  (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

Recap

In yesterday's post we talked about what caused Emelia's plane to be so far off course.

Researchers believe it was part error on her navigator's calculations but also cloudy weather which prevented him from using the stars to correct their path and lastly, the radio signals were not getting to the ship which was waiting for her on Howland Island and their's were not getting to her.

They ended up being 100 miles off course and close to running out of fuel.

Today's story

Emelia landed on the first island she saw which was Nikumaroro. Actually it is technically an Atoll which is an outcropping of coral. Apparently they were not seriously hurt even though the landing had to be a rough one.

She kept broadcasting, trying to reach the Coast Guard ship Itasca, at Howland Island. They weren't receiving her transmissions but a girl in Florida was!

Betty was 15 at the time and loved listening to her father's radio, he'd put a 60 foot antenna up and the radio had abilities to receive short wave transmissions.

Betty was sitting in front of the radio when she heard a female voice come over saying, "This is Emelia Earhart. This is Emelia Earhart." source

Well, Betty was a big fan of Emelia like so many girls and women of the time so she excitedly grabbed a school notebook and began taking down every word she could make out.

The transmission was faint, scratchy, fragmented and intermittent. It kept breaking up so she didn't really get sentences but one or a few words at a time. This went on for an hour until they stopped.

When her father got home Betty told him about it and showed him the notebook and he rushed out and called the Coast Guard. But they blew him off. They told him that they had ships in the area and everything was under control.

Obviously they didn't take him seriously. If they HAD, they would've been able to find her in quick order!

No one believed her

Betty kept the notebook and tried for decades to get someone to listen to her about it but no one would until the research group that I talked about in previous posts, TIGHAR...which stands for The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, took notice.

Those guys did indeed listen to her and went and sat down with her and her notebook 60 some years after the event. They determined that her dad's radio which was a Zenith Model 1000Z, was very capable of receiving signals from the South Pacific.

You can read TIGHAR'S technical analysis on how this is possible here

Here are the three pages of notes that she took... in her handwriting and also printed out so they're easier to read.

According to these notes, obviously they had landed on a beach and not crashed in the ocean as the government has always stated. It sounds like they had some minor injuries, especially Fred.

According to the timeline she had landed at low tide so the plane filling with water was the high tide coming in a few hours later.

She was telling them exactly where she was

The TIGHAR researchers couldn't understand why she would be repeating the words "New York" though.

They think she was actually saying Norwich. Because on Nikumaroro is a well known ship wreck of the Norwich City, a steamer that ran aground in 1929.

They believe she was telling everyone where she was because she knew they were aware of that ship.

Here's a photo of Nikumaroro taken in 1938 which clearly shows the grounded Norwich:

In the next post we'll talk about more evidence and the ongoing search being conducted by Rober Ballard, the man who found the Titanic.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

That's just sad. Things could have ended so differently.

Yes, apparently the military nor any ships picked up those distress calls so they didn't believe that a 15 yr old at home could have!

I can see why the kid thought she was hearing New York.. When it was Norwich.

Yes Ma'am it does make sense and I'm sure that's what Emelia was saying. I think it's amazing that she would think to write it all down, they think it was quite accurate too. Except the New York thing. lol.

Actually they could have save her... man that's so sad

What a terrible shame that the 15 yr old wasn’t believed.

Isn't that something? I can understand why they didn't believe her but someone should have at least appointed someone to check out her story.

Anybody know if Emelia had an accent?

The transcript says N.Y., and they assume this means New York, and think this was her saying Norwich.

I can see why this probably all sounded like nonesense to somebody reading it back. Anybody know to what level of effort went into the oceanic rescue search? It almost seems like there was a bit of a cover up operation, or perhaps it really did come down to prejudice against a young girl and her miracle home radio working better than the military could manage.

Howdy creativetruth! Yes, Betty explained to the researchers that she abbreviated what she thought was New York being said.

I haven't read that they sent any airplanes out to look for her, I know they had several ships that went out, but I don't think they knew how far off course she was. Back in the 30's I don't think they had planes in use that were designed as search planes.

That's a good point about the military not wanting to admit that a regular civilian radio could pick up what their radios couldn't! There definitely could have been some efforts not be embarrassed which could mean a coverup. Great points creativetruth, thank you!

On the side note my friend, have you ever tried trading crypto?

No but I was looking at a trading program the other day because it was only $99 and I was thinking about it. Have you done crypto trading?

Mirror trading international? Tell me more about this one my friend

It's a brokerage and a wallet that is using AI to do all their Forex trading and each person with a Bitcoin deposit with them earns a daily profit on their account, paid in Bitcoin.

The miracle of compounding comes to life with that 12% earned each month. Here is a calculator: https://www.mirrortradinginternational.com/income-calculator/

I think they've been running for almost 3 years now with a great track record but other than that fact I don't know how to check how legit they are.

They also have a referral system for people who want to help build their company. I'm actually thinking about doing some marketing and see if that works.

The minimum deposit to earn the daily profit(which has been running about 0.50 percent) is $100. To earn on your marketing you have to put $200 in.

Here is there company site: https://mymticlub.com/?referral=janton

And this site is not as boring and gives the best details on one page:
https://cashcowprojects.com/janton

And where the revenue comes from? They state that their trading using some AI algorith is good enough to give users 12% ?

The revenue comes from their trading profits. Yes they are now exclusively using AI to trade with. They split the profits to the different company divisions. Lately they've been able to make about a half percent profit each trading day. That adds up to roughly 10 or 12% each month.

That sounds neat! I haven't heard of them.

Howdy again sir optout! I agree and with Bitcoin supposedly taking off to new heights this year, one can make some large gains while growing your bitcoin wallet. It's a great system but do you know how to check out a company to make sure they're legit?

I haven't seen anything suspicious with these guys but I've been duped before. lol.

Me too! I've fallen for a few scams in crypto. Now I just assume everything is a scam until proven otherwise. LOL!

lol..that's sad that we have to be that way! About the safest thing is still Bitcoin, it's kinda leaving the altcoins in the dust.

No way, it would require like 12+ hours a day to do professional trading... Only the guys with one year worth of expenses in their account can afford to invest their time this way (this is at least the situation in my country).

But I rised the issue because I did some "trading" on Steem... But only the 99% success rate ones lol. For instance, every tine SBD is less than 1$ I bought as much as I can afford. And when steem gets at least 0.35$ each I get something between 30-40% ROI.

Also, whenever I see ENG tokens (the native currency of Steem-Engine platform) below 1 steem per ENG I jump bin and buy somethkng between 100 steem worth of ENG, right now it is a realy nice opportunity to buy then since they just released non fungible tokens (NFT) and you need to buy ENG to launch them... So demand for ENG is 80% likely to rise a lot in the next month or something....

That's brilliant strategy sir joelsegovia, sounds like you just need more money to work with.

I've tried HARD to trade for a few years now. I've spent thousands of dollars on classes and "VIP" training. I had some big wins here and there, and some big losses. I figured it all up recently, and I would have been MUCH better off just buying and HODLING. Especially now that there are ways to earn passive income (interest) on just holding crypto. The Celsius app is a great place to save your crypto and earn impressive interest rates on it. There are others. Staking Tezos has been very good to me. Maker DAO and decentralized finance are now offering all sorts of ways to make money with crypto without the zero sum game of trading.

Howdy sir optout! thanks for this great information. I'll have to look at Celsius. We have a little Bitcoin in Mirror Trading International and they pay about 10 to 12% each month so we're thrilled with them.

I've read that Wall Street is going all in and creating different products to make money with crypto similar to the ETF's so it's getting interesting.

I'm not saying you can't make money trading, but some people have a knack for it and other just never figure it out. I'm one of those that probably won't ever get it, so I'm focusing on saving and long term investing. I get the long term plays right. I fail at predicting price in the short term every single time.

That's what I've come to accept too...that some people have a knack for it and I never did. lol. So I agree with your philosophy and course of action.

Any official link dir to go and give it a look 😊

I'm glad you asked! Here's an affiliate link to Celsius. It's app only, so you have to get it on a smartphone of some kind. If you like it, and deposit $200 or more, they'll give you and me an extra $10. I've been using them for a while, I've even gotten a loan from them on my BTC holdings. It's super easy! https://celsiusnetwork.app.link/Johnb875

As far as the Tezos (XTZ), probably the easiest way to bake that is to buy it on Kraken or Coinbase, and stake it right on the exchange. Staking it yourself isn't hard either though.

And the magical world of DeFi is just beginning and changing fast. I don't know much about it myself, but you would do well to look at Maker DAO (MKR) and it's DAI stablecoins, Dy/Dx a decentralized exchange, and there's a thing called "Pool" which is a no lose lottery, kinda cool!

This is making me sad! A little sick actually, that they could easily have been saved, and only 100 miles away. Great work, as always.

Howdy owasco! Yes it is a very sad story but an interesting one. To know that they could have been saved is very disturbing though. Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you!

Nice

howdy there steem-plus! Thank you so much for the upvote!

If they landed on the beach and the plane was no longer there then the tides took it out into the ocean? Why wouldn't they have gotten out of the plane after the landing....or why would they sit there in the plane with the tide rising?...so many unanswered questions still...I sure hope the guy finds the plane so we can finally know one hundred percent for sure.

Howdy sunlit7! Yes they think she landed on a part of the beach which is level and smooth but narrow and then it drops off deep into the ocean. They say it would only have stayed there a few days before being washed off that narrow beach into the deep ocean.

I think they were just trying to use the radio as much as possible because they knew the high tide would come in and they didn't know how long they could use it. I think they used it over a couple of days until the water got too high or the plane was washed off the beach.

They transmitted at night because the blazing hot temperatures made the plane feel like an oven in the daytime. They also did a little bit of Morse Code at the last.

A transmission was received by Morse Code which said it might be their last transmission because of rising water. But for some reason the navy ships and coast guard weren't receiving the messages except maybe that last code message but I don't think they could reply back so that had to have been very discouraging for Emelia and Fred.

Indeed.

I never expected to get a one word reply from sunlit7! lol.

Hummm....you suggesting I am long winded? lol.

lol...no I'm saying you're a writer and not like some (mostly males) who just grunt or on steemit they give a one or two word answer much of the time! Most women are better communicators anyway.

Another great post Jonboy! I've been absent for a while again. It seems like you've written more on Amelia earlier. I'm going to read those posts!

Howdy sir optout! yeah that's the problem with doing a series, even short ones like this but I thank you for the kind words!

I like it. Because each one is a quick easy read if I don't have much spare time, and if I do have spare time, well then I can go through the whole series all at once!

I like your thinking on this sir optout! Are you still working fulltime? You probably told me but I forgot.

No. I got laid off right before Christmas! It was ok though. I never really liked working anyway. Now I'm just hustling. It's nail biting some days, but it's working so far, and I like the freedom!

But what are you working on or how are you making money now? If you don't want to answer that here you can contact me at janton #8472 on Discord.

I've been struggling a bit. I sold some of my crypto to keep carrying on. I think I'm good now. I've been playing with Facebook ads and I'm just starting to see results. I might not need a job! That's the hope anyway.

Well that's great sir optout! fb ads to sell what?

Crazy! Onto today’s post now.

Howdy dfinney! Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Sad😚

Yes I agree. It's one of those sad but true incidents that make you scratch your head. This kid heard her but the best military and government radios didn't.

Hmm good for thought here janton. They will hear what they want to hear 😚

Posted using Partiko Android

Very true. Typical people in charge. They should have at least had someone check her story out.

Too bad they didn't find her sooner. They could have had the idiots that blew off the message sacked. I wonder why they didn't get to the grounded ship. You would think it would offer more protection than the plane and be higher up, allowing the signal to maybe travel a little further...

I guess there was no reason to go to the grounded ship and I don't know if they could have detached their radio and taken it off the plane but that would have been a good idea.

What a bloody ignorant Coast Guard. it's all their fault!!!

Well, after Emelia landed they weren't receiving her radio transmissions. They think her antenna was damaged.

That must have been incredibly scary if they were stuck in the aircraft, injured, with water rising. Damn.

Well they weren't stuck but they knew they had to abandon the plane soon. There was also a message sent by Morse Code which said it might be their last transmission because the water was getting high and they had to get out. And it was.

Nobody listened to Betty until 60 years later? That is ridiculous! The Coast Guard should have at least written down the info given by her father, just in case. How sad.

Howdy Butterfly! How are you tonight? I don't suppose you watched the Super Bowl. You were probably watching some bug documentary.

But yes, the Coast Guard looked ridiculous for not even having anyone check out her story. Shame on them. The only people who finally listened to her were the TIGHAR research group.
