Outstanding Hopi pottery(I like those pottery canteens):

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

In the last post I shared more pottery examples of the Southwestern tribes, primarily the Hopi, Navajo, Zuni and Pueblo, and talked about the unusual hairstyle of the Hopi maidens.

After I published my post the lovely and gracious @tamaralovelace was kind enough to send me a video showing a Hopi mother styling her daughter's hair in the Squash Blossom style and explaining the puberty ceremony the young ladies go through, it's a great video if you're interested in the Hopi culture.

Well, today I have a few more pieces of pottery to share and I hope you enjoy them.

One of my favorite designs, simple but elegant:

A new piece precisely copying an ancient design:

Very cool design, to me it looks like an abstract owl:

My heart goes out to this lady even though she's long gone. She looks so miserable. This photo is from the National Archives and shows a Hopi potter selling her wares but it looks like her hand is a little disfigured or scarred. If I saw her I'd buy every bit of pottery she had! This was taken in the year 1900.

It's rare to find antique jugs with the handles intact:

Turtles were a common design theme:

Although most of the pottery follows the ancient designs, there are also newer designs being created by Navajo artists with the use of vibrant colors:

You get the idea. The designs and varieties are endless! Many items and all handcrafted by First Nations artists can be purchased at http://americanindianoriginals.com. Everything from jewelry to rugs, all handmade by American Indians.

Also, at https://perrynulltrading.com/ they have a tremendous selection of handcrafted jewelry and artwork which celebrate the culture and skill of the Native Americans. One of their artists is potter Bertha Tom.

She uses the ancient methods and designs of the Anasazi. Most designs she's gotten from collecting pottery shards and pieces from the land of her people.

I absolutely love those ancient designs, although they really look very modern! I could even easily incorporate some of them into my own home decor.

It's strange how over the centuries the aesthetics don't change that much - all these years later we still appreciate similar colours, shapes and patterns.

Howdy there vliet! Thanks so much for stopping by and you are so right about the designs, I need to get some of those pottery pieces. I really like the look of your posts and you like history! That's my specialty, well, history of the American Wild West is my specialty so that might not be your thing but I'll stop by as often as I can to your blog. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Thanks @janton for stopping by! There're so many interesting blogs on steemit, it's hard to keep up :-) yes, history is something I love, doesn't matter which part of the world. For me it's the story of humanity and creativity that's so fascinating... although so much of it is very sad, I must say...

Howdy today vliet! yes, I get critizied for my history posts being too violent, bloody, or depressing but that's what our history is like, in every country of the world! But it's also a great way to learn how to not make the same mistakes. Thanks so much for getting back to me!

Hi @janton! The pottery pieces are quite beautiful! I love the ones with the vibrant colors but my favorites are the ones with the colors of the two front pieces in the second photo. I'm glad you included the video that @tamaralovelace sent you..it was fascinating to watch and hear the story behind the different hairstyles.

Howdy deerjay! I agree, the pottery is amazing and someday I'll have lots of it! I enjoyed the video too, very interesting and educational. Thanks so much for commenting!

You are welcome @janton!

Evenin’ Cowboy! You found fantastic pottery. I like the shape of them in the first photo.
The Hopi potter does look miserable. I wondered if her wrist and part of the hand were wrapped in sort of a bandage.
It’s great the modern artists use the older designs and ancient methods to make pottery.

Howdy redheadpei! Yeah that potter may have had some kind of bandage, I can't tell. She looks too frail to be lifting heavy potter though. Thanks, I'm a little crazy for great pottery!

Crazy stuff! I want to have them all!!

haha! you and me both sir kaminchan, you have good taste!

Hahaha! Crazy people like baskets and earthen pottery!

howdy sir kaminchan! I agree, it's totally amazing. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Im quite clumsy, so looking at those just makes me think....if I was involved in making them they would all have cracks or broken bits.
Without me there, they are really cool!

lol! well me too, I have zero artistic abilities or skills so I'm totally blown away by these!

Hey jonboy janton, you might need a few gold coins to buy one of these lovely pots. I hope the potters do a good business.

I think they range in price from about $150 to $300 but I haven't priced them all. So yes they are a little expensive but each one is signed by the artist and they are all unique so they're probably a good investment.

Howdy esteem! thanks so much for the upvote and the great platform.

Great post. The pottery is beautiful with all the detailed designs and colors. (U/R)

Howdy Trudee, thanks so much and I agree, I'm constantly amazed at the creativeness skill.

nice

Howdy sir suman156, thanks so much for reading and commenting!

WOW I love all the pottery but that Photo of the lady is so powerful and touching, and very sad

Howdy JJ! yes I agree, like I said, I would have had to buy everything she had! I hope she got help and support in her last years.

That’s what went through my miNd as well
We can but hope

I want a turtle pot! I don't see a potter's wheel in any of the photos but, by the shape of them, they must be using them. Well, that one photo shows a tipsy one, so maybe that one was completely hand-formed. There are some nice designs there. Some almost look art deco.

Yes, I really like the geometric designs also but all of them are fascinating. I'd take any of them!

That's incredible stuff. Pottery is such a great art and these pieces are just amazing.

Howdy sir wwwiebe! I totally agree, I'm amazed at the designs and skills it takes to make these.
I really like your blog so I'll be stopping in as often as I can. Your profile says you are game designer. I keep hearing that the Steem blockchain is great to host games on, is that your assessment also?

I honestly haven't done any sort of gaming on a blockchain, at least not yet. The games I'm currently working on are mobile and tabletop. I do have an idea for a blockchain app, mind you, but it's a low priority at the moment.

Howdy again sir wwwiebe...Oh I see, well I hope the other projects are massive successes and I hope when you get to the blockchain app that it will be equally successful!

Howdy steem-plus and thanks for the upvote!

You are right about that old lady. So sad, but her poetry is so beautiful!

On the positive note, the First Nations Artists are doing marvelous job keeping the beautiful art of their ancestor alive. I believe, they are the bright light of the future 😊

Howdy Miss Lena! I agree, it's encouraging to see them able to create and sell their products, I just wish I could buy alot of it!

Hopefully lot's of people do buy it............best you can do is to pray for them and send them good energy. Even what you are doing now is helpful, because you are promoting them and sending the message to Universe.

That's true but I'd feel better...or I should say I WILL feel better when I can buy their products.

Well, than you have to figure out how to make lots of money, lol.

I'm working on it and steemit better be part of it, a BIG part of it! lol.

I hope you are right!

no problem. I usually am. (just don't ask Mrs. J. that. .how often I'm right)

Howdy again Sir @janton, what a life they all have had, even the old lady with the disfigured hand and yet! They display their beauty within on their pots.
So great to see.
Blessings!

Howdy again sir papilloncharity! I'm so glad you appreciate the artistry. You are a type of artist too with your camera.

Debbies DNA has a lot of Hopi, or navajo; which is funny, because before we knew, she bought a number of pots.

She just loved the designs....

:)>

hey that was a natural attraction! How did she find out she was part Indian?

DNA Testing. She was adopted, so she was interested. We have found two siblings or first cousins thus far.

She has 5% Jewish blood, and a LOT of Irish and Hopi (or Navajo). I am pretty boring European, LOL!

:)>

That's a wild mix of races she has! wow. oh I saw that post, that's what it's about? I'll get to it.

The science of DNA is outrunning our ability to control it. THe bad is beginning to surface.

:)>

What bad? i don't get it. Science is outrunning us? me no savvy.

What bad? i don't get
It. Science is outrunning
Us? me no savvy.

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

Nice Haiku!

:)>

Invasion of privacy, at the most basic level, our DNA.

Outrunning us is true because we are not ready with law to control this monster! Think of it as DNA Bull riding....

ok, that makes sense now. I been slacking off on my mind reading course so my bad.

Finally a potter that is smiling! LOL! She has every right to be proud of her amazing work. Stunning! I was thinking back to the old days (1900's) and how upset they would be if they dropped and broke a piece of their pottery. I would be crying like crazy.

Howdy again Butterfly! yes I agree. I think they probably had a tradition of only carrying the plain pottery until they were very experienced!

What an amazing piece of art! I adore pottery ))
Indians saved their ancient patterns, this is so great. I think every element has its meaning, and it all together give special sense to the whole work. At least, it is true for Ukrainian ancient art.

Howdy today zirochka! Do you guys have alot of pottery over there?

Yes. Pottery, embroidery, painting on Easter eggs, etc. It is very a very interesting and rich part of our culture

Howdy again zirochka! I need to google Ukraine pottery and see how similar or different the patterns are compared to our tribes' patterns and styles, they may be similar.

I think it would be interesting to know what do you think if it and what style would you like most of all.

Posted using Partiko Android

Howdy zirochka! I looked up some Ukranian pottery and man is it beautiful! Very different designs and styles but wonderful! I guess I just like pottery. Here's a piece that looked a little similar to American Indian pottery. But most of it is very different!

nhhsuazepo.png

Cool finding!
Our ceramics has more floral motives and less geometric

Yes. All beautiful though!

I wonder what happened to the woman with disfigured hand.

I would buy all of these if only I have the means. All designs are beautiful and it does seem a lot of effort are put in each one.

Howdy sir leeart! me too. I don't know what happened to her but I hope she got some help or support so she could live her last years in peace and comfort.

I hope that was the case. We can only assume what her story is.

Anyway, back to the pottery. Do you have a favorite? So many to choose from it's hard to choose just one.

Yes that's a tough question sir leeart! Probably in the old style the one which I said was one of my favorites, about 4 photos from the top. Of the newer styles I like the round one under the photo of the artists.

I'm still struggling which one i'd choose lol! I even scrolles thru the prwvious post

lol! that's a good sign sir leeart, that means you have good taste. I'd love to buy them all also!

I hope i can even just one but man the cost of it shipping it here is probably more expensive

howdy again sir leeart! yes, the shipping would be as much as the price of the pottery! No problem when you are rich though!

What a lovely set of jugs, it’s amazing really how much detail they put into them. I too like the abstract owl - very cool.

Howdy sir c0ff33a! You have great taste! lol. I'm going over later to see if you're still on that facinating Brazil trip, that's amazing!

very interesting video !!! but I think I hardly ventured to repeat the same hairstyle :))) it requires certain skills. pottery made very masterfully! I really liked many of them on your photos.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

Howdy tali72! Thanks, I really like the pottery also., I need to look up Israeli pottery and see what kind of designs they have. I think you should try that hairstyle! lol. That would make a great post!

hee hee hee :)))) it is a pity that I recently cut off the length of my hair. Now I have to wait for them to grow back :)))) Israeli ceramics will surprise you :) it is completely Moroccan)))) although in the Old City of Jerusalem you can buy ceramics Armenian style because there is an Armenian quarter

lol! That would be hilarious if you did your hair in that style at least for a post! I forgot to look up Israeli pottery but I'll do that. I bet it's really nice.
