Stunning Pottery Of The Southwest Tribes

in history •  6 years ago

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I spent the last two posts showing off the amazing basketry skills of the Apache and other tribes and I've always loved the pottery of the Southwest tribes so I thought I'd share some of them today.

The most significant pottery makers were the Hopi, Zuni, Navajo and Pueblo tribes.

Unlike the basket weavers, whose best and most complex work is no longer being made, the pottery designs and quality has not gone away. In fact, more fabulous pieces and designs are being made everyday.

These antique pieces look just like the modern ones:

Potters these days are using the same ancient techniques and designs of the ancient Anasazi people who were masters of the art.

The Anasazi were the famous "Cliff Dwellers" who built great cities in the walls of canyons and cliffs in the Four Corners region of the United States, comprising southeastern Utah, northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southwestern Colorado.

Their buildings still stand today after nearly a thousand years.

By the way, the cities were abandoned and the reason why has been an unsolved mystery. They can be visited at the Mesa Verde National Park and the Canyon De Chelly National Park.

The good news is that they left behind alot of pottery and the same patterns are still produced today. The variety is almost endless, here are a few of them along with vintage photos:

Much of the time the women carried the pots on their head as demonstrated by this young Indian maiden:

One of my favorites, this is a seed jar with a lid:

This is an unusual photo from about 1890 because most potters were female, apparently not all though:

I really like this photo because the Navajo or Hopi woman has a pleasant countenance and it looks like it would be very hard to balance that shape of pot on a person's head. It's also interesting that of all the pottery I've seen of that style, that particular one seems to have no designs on it at all:

A simple but elegant design on this antique jar:

What struck me about this photo is that this is a very strong woman. Unfortunately I don't know what tribe she is:

I have at least one more post with great pottery and vintage photos coming tomorrow.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

As creative, artistic and beautiful as the baskets. Truly amazing.

Howdy today sir Vincent! thanks and I agree. How's the vacation going? Maybe you'll like it so much you'll move there!

Howdy Jonboy. The holiday is going just fine. I like it here, but not enough to move here. I am a tropics boy. I don't like the cold. How's life treating you, my friend?

Howdy again sir Vincent! Cold??? How cold can Spain be? I think you're spoiled a little. lol. Going great here, getting hot but you'd probably think it was cool!

It was 21C to 24C - it's a bit warmer now - 28C. It's great when you are in the sun, but when there's a breeze, it is chilly.
It can go up to 36 in August.

oh 36 is getting quite warm but probably not for you. It would be very warm if the humidity is high, I'm not a big fan of high humidity.

That last shot is a doozy! Oh boy.

I love the art work so much!

Those pots look so amazing, it really cool that you incorporate your stories with beautiful photos. THanks for sharing this and have a great day

Howdy today sgbonus! thanks so much for the kind words. Yes, the old photos are as fascinating to me as the pottery and I'm so glad that you appreciate them!

Howdy Janton! This quote is actually funny, lol.

Anyway, I am very intrigued by all the information and of course photography you are sharing here. I don't think I ever heard about that mysterious place and you know I love a good mystery. I wonder of you could find out more about it.

Of course the pottery is absolutely exquisite including the plain one, because I love plain rustic things. However, I would be happy with any one of them, lol.

By the way, I just posted new recipe today.........but you are soooooooo behind, lol.

lol! I know I am, it's the dang voting power that disappears so fast, I can't wait to get big enough that it isn't a restraint on me.

Well, you'll like the next post because I got more beautiful pieces and more interesting old photos of Indian ladies and pottery. I find the old photos as fascinating as the pottery.

I DO have more information about the Anasazi people from recent excavations a couple of research teams have been doing. It's quite detailed but they have the major part of the mystery solved, which is why they left. I'll have to do a post about them.

I understand Janton, lol.

So you say you there is an explanation of why thy left and yo have it??? Oh please do the post about that!!! I can't wait!

Well I hesitate a little because it's a bloody mess. lol. People already think I'm too violent but I'll probably do it just because it's been a great mystery for researchers for a couple hundred years.

Ohhhhhhhhhh so it's violent??? I know that about the Aztecs too. They did human sacrifices and were cannibals and my daughter told me that they had syphilis too, lol. Apparently they vanished do to diseases that they got from Europeans, that's what some scientists believe.

Yes it's a blood bath and there's also cannibalism. Come to think of it that sounds pretty cool, I think I'll do it!
Oh yes, the Aztecs were a real mess too. But at least the Anasazi didn't do human sacrifices, they were a peaceful race. Maybe that's why they are a "were" race. lol.

That would have been a very high quality image for 1890... Equipment that could pull off that shallow depth of field and still maintain sharpness like that would have been expensive. Very cool baskets and pottery.

I got to see some of the cliff dwellings in Arizona, when i was a youngster. I don't remember the name of the park, but it wasn't one of the big ones and there were only a few shelters carved into the rock. It was very cool, though. We saw a free-standing structure that is believed to be Pueblo, as well.

Howdy sir fotosdenada! well sir, it may have been a little later, concerning the photo, I know who the photographer was and he did alot of work in the pueblos in 1890(and that's what the word "about" means, lol) so it probably wasn't long after that but I've also seen old photos come out crystal clear after they process them and clean the image up, however they do that.

The cliff dwellings are amazing so I'm sure I'll do a post about them because they pretty much have it figured out, what happened to the Anasazi.

Fantastic old pieces of amazing art work! These photos are food for my mind!

Howdy again sir kaminchan! thanks so much for your appreciation. If you like these you'll like the next post too!

Nice bit of history there sir janton and they were pretty artistic in them days very nice looking pottery :)

Howdy sir hangin! thanks, I'm glad you appreciate it, I didn't think you would coming from Australia where there is no such thing as art! lol.

Ahhhh...you red-necks have a lot to learn , Australia is very much artistic...lol :)

yeah right! lol.

Take a look at the the Australia Aboriginal Art for a starter you might learn something new sir janton...haha !!

I've actually always been fascinated by the aboringinies art work for many decades now. I even have a boomerang painted in typical aboriginal art form! lol.

I did a story on the Aborigines art work on the rocks in the Kimberly mountains you may have missed it go take a look here is the link...

Boulder Sunday by @shasta - Aboriginal Art on the Kimberly Rocks !!

Howdy today sir hangin! oh man, this is an amazing post and I'm so glad you sent it to me, yes I'm sorry I missed it. Fabulous! And that country is my kind of place, there's no one there! lol. I could step outside of my house and shoot in any direction! Of course, I'd have to smuggle my guns in first. this is a wonderful post sir hangin!

What an interesting post @janton You have excelled again with your efforts in sourcing the most amazing images. I really love the intricate art work on that pottery.......such incredible talent those ladies have.

How I'd love to visit those ancient homes of the 'Cliff Dwellers,' It's wonderful to know that people can explore them at Mesa Verde National Park and the Canyon De Chelly National Park.

Howdy Trudee! yes, those parks are amazing and it's one area of the West that I haven't been to yet. I'm glad you appreciate the art work that's meaningful coming from an artist!

I love that pottery, too. I debated about buying a piece of pottery when I was out there in the early 80s, but it just seemed so expensive! Then I was kicking myself for not buying it when I saw the prices 30 years later!

Howdy Sir @janton. Amazing that the Anasazi deserted their hillside cities. Reminds me of a used wasp nest, still intact, but unoccupied.
The pots here are great my friend!
Blessings!

Howdy sir papilloncharity! yes I found more information so I'll be doing a history post about the Anasazi sometime. They figured out what happened to them.

Might have been a plague, or a cosmic event, or a fear and it's certainly going to be interesting to see what happened my friend!
Blessings!

Howdy sir papilloncharity! well sir, it wasn't a natural event but that's a great guess and what has been assumed because there was some very long droughts back then, but unfortunately it was something much more sinister.

Howdy Sir @janton, waiting with bated breath!
Blessings!

I hesitate to write because it's a bloody story and people already don't like my violent stories. But I'll still probably do it because the mystery is a long-standing one and I think it's pretty well solved finally. Thanks for the encouragement.

Beautiful jars and art on them. I’m surprised how clear the photos are from that time period. How these women balance the pottery on their head is a mystery to me. i wonder if they break any.
That last quote is hilarious. 😂

lol! Is that last quote true or not? lol. I've seen some of the old photos processed to where they are crystal clear and I think these had that done to them. I don't know what they call the process but I read about it. I bet they don't carry any of the nice pieces until they're very good at it!

Amazing works of art! The baskets would be hard enough to carry on their heads when full and I can't imagine these women carrying pottery on their heads. Love the photos. : )

Howdy again Butterfly! I agree, I have no idea how they do that kind of thing. It hurts my head and neck just looking at those photos!

Wow they are pretty gnarly

Howdy sir blanchy! They're amazing aren't they? You have good taste in pottery!

Not really into the pottery. Upvoting Cuz You are pretty awesome tho.... lol

Howdy sir krazzytrukker! that's fine and thank you, are you working this weekend or is that a dumb question?

Leaving out Saturday night. No such thing as a dumb question..... but now I have heard some really stupid answers, excuses, & explanations.... lol

Posted using Partiko Android

what the? leaving out Saturday from where? Are you luxuriating at home again?

Haaa.... yes. @ home. We Was watching Yellowstone season 2 episode 1

That Kevin Costner series on Paramount channel.

Posted using Partiko Android

That's great sir krazzytrukker! Never heard of it, what is it?

You need to go get season one. Get up to speed. It is a modern day struggle between a Cattle Baron (Costner) and the Indian Nation up in Montana over land. Water rights. Casino and land developments. It is typical Kevin Costner. He has colon cancer and is fighting off the crooked effers that are trying to steal his land.

Posted using Partiko Android

how do you get to it? I don't have access to it but it sounds great.

I know about the existence of cave cities and we were even in one of them in the Crimea, but I did not hear anything about these cities. it's just amazing !!!!! Indian ceramics are no less beautiful than their wicker things. the photos are really very nice!

Howdy tali72! Yes, the entire culture is very interesting isn't it? Thanks so much for commenting.
