The Government's Plan To Force The Tribes Into Submission

in history •  6 years ago  (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about the Wild West and the incredible story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.

He's now 16 years old at this point in the story and has become a full blown warrior who hates and fears the White man. And in fact, has taken many a scalp.

Yesterday's post

In the last post Hermann's tribe made agreements with other tribes of the region to fight and kill all whites they saw because the Indians were starting to panic.

They were being pushed from their traditional hunting lands by settlers and their main source of food and supplies, the buffalo, was being slaughtered by the thousands each day.

The U.S. federal government's plan was to force the Plains Indian tribes into starvation and onto the reservations by eliminating the buffalo. It was actually worse than that though because many military leaders and politicians wanted to kill off the tribes by starvation.

The feds supported it without doing it themselves

While the government didn't send the army out to kill the herds, they DID furnish hunting expeditions with rifles, ammunition and supplies. One Colonel said "Kill every buffalo you can! Every buffalo dead is an Indian gone.”

Here's a hunting party living it up on the Plains. Many brought tables, tents, and turned it into a big time party with lots of alcohol as they slaughtered the herds.

But many were small groups went out to make a fortune in buffalo hide bounties.

Hermann said that everyday was exciting because there were so many buffalo hunters all over the country that every time they headed out for the day they were bound to get into some fight or skirmish.

The end results

The government plan worked. Actually it goes down in history as one of the few federal government plan's that actually succeeded and worked like it was supposed to!

The thundering buffalo herds numbering 30 to 50 million strong were reduced to a few hundred and the great beasts almost became extinct. And it DID force the tribes into submission by starvation.

This is the most famous photo of buffalo skulls which gives you an idea of the massive numbers that were murdered:

There was also starvation on the reservations because the government didn't keep their promises.

This is almost a side note and not as important but the disappearing herds also took away a main fuel supply for thousands of settlers and homesteaders on the Plains who burned buffalo dung for heating and cooking:

The buffalo was barely saved from extinction but now there are herds on private and public lands in the United States and Canada. I think the number is roughly up to 25,000. Hopefully they'll keep increasing and thriving.

Shoot, I done used up all my time talking about the buffalo situation before I got to today's story! lol. Well, at least you know why the tribes were so outraged, angry, and desperate during this time. Their very way of life was being taken from them.

How many stupid things have been done and will people do in the future!...
Honestly, I saw such "mountain" of bones in a cartoon (The Simpsons, if I am not mistaken), but I did not take it seriously. Now, the truth is more scary than a scene from a movie :(((

Howdy zirochka! yes it was a very sad thing that happened, both for the buffalo and for the Indians. And you are no stranger to stupid government policies!

The things that men can do for their own benefit. Man has always been it's own enemy.
These governments and some of the decisions they take at times make me wonder if they have a conscience. 😔

Exactly sir hermannsol and you have witnessed such dumb government policies in your own country I'm sure, so sad.

It is really sad Sir Janton

Howdy tonight sir hermannsol! Yes sir, in my opinion it was our country's gravest mistake and biggest sin in the way we tried to annihilate the Indian nations. There's no way that was God's way of doing it.

I think I completely agree with you on that.

I was also wondering how many buffalo are left and I found many different estimates, some as high as 200,000 to 500,000.

Howdy sir Keith! oh I hope you are correct, that would be wonderful and would explain why there is so much meat available in the stores, that makes me feel better, thank you!

Howdy Jonboy, wow...that was a fair bit of buffalos killed. No wonder the Indians were starved into surrendering.

Howdy sir Vincent! yes sir, it was a mess. Would you have been tempted to do that? you could get rich if you didn't get scalped!

Howdy Jonboy. Nah, not in my nature. I leave it to you. You go ahead and kill as many buffalos as you can and get very rich.

haha! Well at first there were millions so it wasn't a moral issue but then after a few years it got to be very morally wrong. Besides, I wouldn't have gone without a large army detail or a very large group because of the Indians.

Such heartbreaking stupidity. I really don't know what else to say.

Howdy tonight Melinda! yes, I think it was one of the dumbest and cruelest policies the government ever did. A national shame and embarrassment.

Truly. I'm glad you found time to get a post done today. Your running around must not have taken up as much time as you thought it would.

well I got lazy and didn't start mowing like I planned. lol. But tomorrow I gotta git after it. your lawn guy has started mowing yours right?

He has mowed twice now. With all this rain it is growing like crazy. We had thunderstorms all last night and now they're starting in again tonight. It doesn't seem to be able to make it 12 hours without raining.

oh my gosh, you guys have to be setting records for rain and snow this year! enough already..you need your hot, dry summer to show up!

The forecast shows rain and thunderstorms through Wednesday. We have been stuck in this weather pattern for much too long!

that really sucks but it has to break into summer sometime! I think. Do you remember it ever being like this before?
sorry for the later reply!

Howdy esteemapp and thank you for the upvote!

Hi janton, so hard to see these photos and actually believe that the decision makers really thought that this was okay!

howdy today angiemitchell! I know, it's hard to believe but they were politicians who had tremendous pressure put on them by businesses and people in the West. Businesses didn't feel safe in building infrastructure with raids going on all the time and
settlers kept telling horror stories about the Indian raids so the politicians were tired of the problems with the Indians and just wanted them gone or dead and they didn't care how it got done.
Their evil plan actually worked though.

Hola, buenos dias senor! Well, I appreciate this Buffalo lesson, sir. I just finished a 3 blog series written by @janton and you know what?? This was a perfect ending.

Man that’s terrible to learn and see the Buffalo. I know you said it’s considered to be a success but I guess those margins are narrow and the success is strictly regarding an Indian surrender. It seems to me, rationally thinking, it’s horrible for the history books and embarrassing to learn.

I’ve seen many of those buffalo, as you have I’m sure. They’re massive animals and actually quite docile. Am I using that word right? 🤔 Out of all of the Buffalo I’ve seen, I’ve never seen any of them excited or really doing anything other than standing still.

Thanks for another good read @janton.

Howdy sir dandays! Thanks for the kind words. Yes, buffalo are very docile. Perfect word to use for them. They only charge if you get too close to their young or get between them and their young, that would not be smart.

Yes, only a success in driving the Indians to the reservations. It had to mess up the ecology of the plains and I need to research that. I saw a stuffed one in a museum in St. Louise and the thing was 8 ft tall at the shoulder! So some of them were giants but the ones these days aren't that big for some reason.

And I keep saying buffalo but that's technically incorrect because the only buffalo species are the water buffalo in Africa and other places, in North America was have Bison. But everyone knows them as buffalo so I use that.

Correct, Bison. We both know that. This may not be the right place but have you ever had bison Jerky?

I have. I haven’t eaten any type of meat other than fish for several years now but I have had bison jerky. It tastes like any other jerky—nothing special.

Howdy sir dandays! Well most people don't know that Bison fact. You kinda remind me of one though. Lounging around eating all day. Being thick skulled. lol.

No sir I haven't had bison meat in any form. One of our resident steemit American Indians has bison from the reservation occasionally and they consider it to be sacred, he says it's delicious. Thinking about putting a few on our property.

Yeah, it’s a rough life, this one God painted—exhausting.

I have another esteem question for you. I’m responding with the app right now actually. If you click the bell icon at the bottom of the home screen, you’re taken to Notifications and Leaderboard. What is “leaderboard?”

Thank you.

that's something I don't have access to since I can't get the newer versions to work on my desktops but that lists the top commentors. I've been the leading commentor since I joined. They give out sbd awards once a month. 15 to 1st, 10 to 2nd, 5 to third.
I mean usually there's some silly bots or something in first place but they don't count.

haha! your first sentence is hilarious sir dandays! lol.

I do understand why the tribes were so angry and why they would want revenge. The pictures of the dried buffalo bones and the mound of skulls really makes an impact and helps to relate to the numbers. It makes me sick! I am glad that you showed the picture of the many buffalo that are alive once again. Keep up the great work @janton! : )

Howdy Butterfly! Well it's a miracle that the buffalo survived at all! Thank you for the kind words and I'm sorry
I keep making you sick! lol.

Howdy again Sir @janton, one of your saddest posts here and to see them bones makes one to grieve for the buffaloes and the people.
Man's cruelty clearly on display!

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

Howdy sir papilloncharity! yes sir it is truly shocking and sad..and stupid! It's a miracle that the buffalo have been spared extinction.
That's the problem with doing history posts, alot of it is sad or insane.

I wonder how many of those bison are genetically pure in that statistic. The ones they're trying to breed here are, apparently, but most were cross-bred with cattle for meat. Bison burgers (they're a thing) are actually produced from these bison-cattle hybrids.

oh ok, that answers the question that I just asked in the other comment. Someone wrote and said we now have between 200,000 and 500,000 but those are probably the hybrids.

sorry for the animals. we saw bison in zoos: not the most beautiful beast :) it's good that now they are trying to restore their numbers as much as possible

"not the most beautiful beast!" lol..very well put tali72, a very diplomatic way the phrase it. lol.

I am just glad the buffalo did not extinct and their numbers are growing!

Yes Ma'am the buffalo herds are growing and while the number of pure breds is relatively small they have large herds which are part beef cattle for the meat production and that's why there's so much buffalo meat available in the supermarkets.

Oh yeah! Just what I want to know Janton, Please tell me more!!! Do you forget sometimes that I am vegan??? And by the way, I don't thik we have that type of meet here. But we have tempeh, Gradein and now even Beyond Meat , which I actually haven't try it yet. Check out the website.
https://www.beyondmeat.com/

I've seen that website before and it really is impressive, I think they can help people cut down on their meat consumption significantly. I would even like to try it. Whenever I hear more about the beef and buffalo combination of breeding to sell more meat I'll let you know. lol.
