The Younger Story: Belle's First Robbery

in history •  6 years ago  (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

Today I'm talking about Belle Starr even though my series is about Cole Younger, one of Americas most successful outlaws in the Old West. Yesterday we left off with Cole heading back to Missouri after he came to visit Belle in Texas and found out she was married to another outlaw by the name of Jim Reed.

Cole left Texas a depressed man. Belle was the only woman he'd ever known and I think he was in a state of shock. But it also shows us that he didn't know a dang thing about women. He was a great bank robber but was clueless about women. He expected her to wait for him for 2 years with no word from him at all while he was with his crew.

If you haven't seen this story Cole is standing on the left side with his brother Bob, sitting is Jesse James on the left with his brother Frank:

Meanwhile Belle was with Jim Reed and they had a baby together, a boy they named Ed.. But Reed was a real sacface. Mean, selfish and cruel. He'd been wanted for robberies and talked about that "profession" for years and I think Belle just got used to the idea.

Her first robbery

She finally went with him on a robbery mission. The job involved robbing a Creek Indian reservation which received cash from the Federal Government and was kept in a small bank there.

Belle, Reed and another man rode up shortly after the cash was delivered, there was only one man there running the place. He refused to give them the money so they "cruelly tortured" him until he did. No explanation of what that meant but it must have been pretty severe.

When they got the cash they took off. The haul was a massive $30,000. In today's dollars that would be $664,000 but would go even farther back then so it was enough to retire on, if they invested it, which of course thieves never did.

It was rather shocking to me to see Belle take part in this, she was a kind and good person from all accounts, and now this? She must have been so disappointed with her life that she was desperate to change it and with a big haul like that she could have, assuming that she got an equal share but knowing her idiot husband she probably didn't.

They didn't stay together after the robbery because he already had the Law looking for him and this made things worse, so he headed for the hills and she stayed in nice hotels in Dallas for awhile. This was in 1873. The other man who was with them was caught and hanged by the famous Judge Parker, who was known as "The Hanging Judge."

About 5 months later her and Reed pulled off another robbery, this time holding up a stagecoach. They stopped the stage, took all the money from the passengers and took any valuables from the mail bags. Then they cut the horses loose and rode off. Apparently their stage didn't have a Shotgun Messenger guarding it like this Texas stage:

source

The reward for this robbery was significant. The Governer of Texas put up $3,000, the Unied States Postal Service put up $3,000 and the stage line put up $1,000 so 7 grand back then was a big hunk of money!

How they got Reed

This is a great story. A deputy named Morris was working under cover and worked up a friendship with Reed. One day they were traveling on a country road, riding on horseback, when they came upon a farm house. They decided to stop and see if they could get the farmer to make them a meal. There was a lady there and she agreed to fix them a meal.

Oh, before they dismounted Morris had suggested they leave their pistols on their saddles so as not to alarm the people who lived there and Reed agreed to that. So when they were finishing up Morris said that he had "swallowed a fly" and needed to go outside "and relieve myself."
QmP4XWrKhEyctSdKwPXzgJStaaib5GRAczyRhSaSaSMjQp.png

I don't even know what that meant. First of all, swallowing a fly didn't seem to make Reed suspicious so it must have been common to have alot of flies around the food! lol. And then I don't know why swallowing a fly would make you have to relieve yourself unless he was talking about something other than using the bathroom. Am I just being dense here? Probably, and someone will explain it to me.
QmP4XWrKhEyctSdKwPXzgJStaaib5GRAczyRhSaSaSMjQp.png

Ok, so Morris knew about the reward money and he wanted it. He goes outside and gets his pistol from his saddle and goes back in and walks up to the table and tells Reed that he's being arrested for the stagecoach robbery.

Well, instead of surrendering Reed tips the table up on it's side, picking it up and rushes Morris with it. Morris grabs the table also and there they go at it like a couple of WWE wrestlers tugging back and forth all over the room. Reed keeps punching Morris in the face but Morris doesn't let go. The lady of the house is running around screaming at the top of her lungs.

Reed buys the farm

Finally Morris takes out his pistol and shoots Reed through the table. Reed dies. Morris borrows the farmer's wagon and takes it to Paris, about 15 miles away. This is in August with really hot temperatures. When he gets to Paris the body is identified and is set aside for some time for someone to claim, I'm not sure how long but it must have been a few days.

No one claims it. Belle didn't show up, perhaps she hadn't heard about it. They then get a driver to take it to what they call a Potters Field, it's where they bury unclaimed bodies. But the driver taking it to the cemetery got so sick because of the decomposing body that he dumped it off on the side of the road and went back to tell the Sheriff who went back out and took it the rest of the way. So there ended the pitiful like of the criminal Jim Reed.

This story and account is well documented and was written up in the Dallas Daily Herald, the Austin Weeky Democratic Statesman and the Galveston Daily News in August, 1874.
(No word on whether the lady was reimbursed for her table getting shot up.)

Belle is now free again at the age of 26. It takes Cole about 3 months for the news to reach him that Belle is free, and he talks about going back to Texas. That's going to be harder than ever with the Pinkertons trying to track him and all the other Lawmen watching for him. He'll have to wait but as soon as he can he'll go see her and Pearl who is 5 or 6 now.

Tomorrow we'll get back to how the bank robbing operation is going.
Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Morning janton, I am very intrigued about Belle not being identified as a robber? She was a part of it with Reed so ......... If I was her I would get out while she is ahead. lol.

well I know in the stagecoach robbery they wore masks and she must not have been identified. Maybe she wore one for the first robbery also.
I don't think she stays out of trouble.

This is going to be interesting to read more history janton.

Great writing, reads like a book. It shows you what power a woman has over a man when Cupid, or should I say Stupid, comes a callin!. Plan on doing some catching up. Quick read, will be very enjoyable. 15 past episodes and I be right with you. Plus, may be a couple you post while I finish!

haha! you're so funny thebigsweed! I appreciate the kind words. This series isn't as popular as my Doc Holliday series but it's not so bad. I try to make them short and easy to read but it's not the easiest thing.

Yes, when Stupid comes callin you might as well kiss your butt goodbye as far as logic and reason!

Hi there @janton , You have been lately posting a lot about guns and robbers which makes me kind of afraid :D
p.s the joke part which I love in each of your post was relevant and funny :D

howdy hananali! what do you mean "afraid"? of what? these things I talk about happened 150 years ago. I'm glad you like the jokes, I know some of them refer to local United States culture and foreigners won't get some of them though.
School is going well?

Afraid of you getting inspired of them and effecting our operation against them wanted people in which we were going to win millions, remember? :D

Most of the jokes are relevant for everyone, like this one is very true here, alot of married women here are overweight

Shchool is going fine, I missed school previous weekend though

what? how did you miss a weekend of school hananali?

I have classes in weekend only, and I missed previous weekend because I had some exam outside of the degree am studying. How's life?

oh I see hananali. Well things are going very good here. My wife started a new job and she really likes it.

That's wonderful, congratulations and good luck to her. Back at the engagement league? I do want to have some competition out there you know i don't like easy wins :D lol

haha! no I'm still out of the competition in the League but I'll probably get back in it at some point.

Hi @janton a decomposing body would attract loads of flies. Could you imagine dragging a body that was nearly a week old with all the maggots. I would also just toss it or burn it.
If you are going to relieve yourself did they have outhouses then in those days because that would make sense.

haha! yeah I can see why that guy got sick hauling the carcass and yes they did have outhouses but I didn't know why swallowing a fly would make you go to the bathroom. well anyway his excuse worked!

Reeds biggest problem in life was the pitiful mustache he wore, Haha ;)

haha! I think that jinxed him!

Belle's free and has a taste for danger now. Uh Oh! She and Cole could be partners, except for the two kids. She shouldn't risk orphaning them. I'm looking forward to more of Cole outsmarting the law.

haha! did that surprise you that she took part in those robberies? I was shocked myself, I knew about her deeds but I thought it was later in life.
and when I was looking for a wanted poster for her I saw one for Pearl instead! They were calling HER the Bandit Queen so I guess her daughter came by it naturally!

OH, her daughter too! Cole would be proud. Concerned for her safety I'm sure but proud.

haha! no Cole didn't like the lifestyle and kept talking about getting out of it. He hated the fact that he had to be paranoid all the time and that he couldn;t ever fully trust anyone.

So I'm sure he wouldn't want that for Pearl, but at the same time he was addicted to it and probably figured at some point he might as well keep it up until ..well you know...all thieves and robbers are always going to do ONE LAST big one so they can retire. and it never plays out that way.

Oh so true about that "just one more" job. So very very true!

all criminals seem to have the same self-destructive mindset. sort of like all libs! lol.

Howdy Janton, so I finally catch up with your recent stories and I am speechless, lol. Those two are quite a pair!!! I can't believe she got merried to a first outlaw who asked her out. Thank god it didn't last long and she didn't hang for that ruthless robbery. But I must say she was very good looking judging from that two hundred years old photo.

What a romance story; Cole is really guilable when comes to women, ha ha! I am really curious what's next 😄

howdy there Miss Lena! thanks so much for the kind words, I'm glad you like the series. Yes, well like I said in my post today poor Cole doesn't have the first clue when it comes to women! lol. He never had any experience with any.
And now he's so tied up with his robbery career that he may never make it back to Texas for Belle even though that's what he talks about all the time to his friends.
Did you do a post today?

Always a pleasure Janton, but I am still hoping that he will, lol. Thank you for reposting my oatmeal bowl :)

well now I think I better do a series about Belle after the Cole series because they don't get back together, sorry. He blew it. I mean I'm not sure but I don't THINK they ever get back together. I did see an old photo and it said it was them and it was definitely him but I haven't verified that it was her. In other words if they ever saw each other again it was many years later.
And you're welcome about that awesome oatmeal post. Oh, I was going to comment on that too, I'll go think of something dumb to say.

I just read your latest story, the train robbery, so I really lost my hope! Oh well :( Okay than, I wait for series about Belle Star.

And you never say anything dump!!!

Ok I'll start looking for a good research book about Belle Starr because I think she goes on to do alot of things.
well I'll TRY not to say anything dumb but I usually don't succeed!

Dump or not, you always make me laugh. I am guessing, that is one of the things your wife likes about you, lol.

Anyway, lets see what you'll dig up about Bell Star!

haha! howdy again Miss Lena! I'm laughing because me wife doesn't think I'm funny and never laughs at anything I say, her sense of humor, if she has one, isn't like mine. so that in itself is funny to me but she would just roll her eyes! lol.

Wow, all that drama and by the age of 26, too! No wonder they didn't live that long back then lol

ha! The lifestyles that they chose were not very conducive to longevity!

Wait, Cole and Belle got back together? I don't have enough popcorn for this!

howdy blacklux! no she married someone else, where you been?

After they figured out that she was a robber, she hid out up here in caves now known as Robbers State Park:

https://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.13232

She sweet talked a lot of guys, as she was robbing them, to aid her in the robbery process.

Nice post @janton,

Thanks, my friend!

:)

yeah but that was later in her career. at this point she isn't well known.

After they figured out that she was a robber

Yes, it was later on for certain., ROFLOL!

:O

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

dang you'd think she could find a better place to hide than OK though!
But on the other hand, she probably fit right in.

Well, finding a place out of the weather, big enough for your horses too, where you can build a nice fire, and count the loot. You could do worse....

Must be nice there, after all it IS a Resort, ROFLOL!

:)

if the stuff hits the fan that place would be crowded wouldn't it?

Truly, in that case living in caves, would start looking good!

The ultimate Earth Battery cooling, in a nice and dry cave. It is sad that things have digressed far enough that that sounds good.

The liberals will spend us into the stone age, if they win this Tuesday! So cool dry caves; here we come!

I guess the biggest question I have is, will it be a hard fork kind of crash, or just slow quietly down to oblivion?

:'

I think it will be slow, at least I hope. I don't think the dems are going to have as great a victory as they want on Tuesday. At least I hope not.

Oh, Belle! I fear you are making some bad choices here! Tip!

haha! yes Ma'am she hasn't been very wise has she? Thank you so much for the tip!

thank you so much, God bless you!

Did he eat a spider to catch the fly?

lol!

A bit of history is always nice and funny to read the rough hard days..lol :)

howdy sir hangin! I agree. Most of us have it very easy in our modern life!

You are so right the young generation is in a lost world today :)

Who's on the left?

If you haven't seen this story Cole is standing on the left side with his brother Bob, sitting is Jesse James on the left with his brother Frank:

Cole Younger is on the left, standing behind Jesse.

you probably feel like you know these guys :)

haha! good point, well I feel like I know Cole and he would be someone who I could be friends with from everything I've read about him. Jesse was mean and enjoyed killing but Cole had respect for people if they were respectful.

There is some good "makins" for a post .. your thoughts on these characters.

howdy back rebeccabe! well I'll probably keep throwing my 2 bit opinion in on my posts and try not to bore everyone.
