What The Cowboys Did After The Cattle Drives Ended

in history •  7 years ago

howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas
where we have a cold front moving in! Yep, temperatures are
supposed to be in the low 90s all week which will be a welcome
relief for sure.

Someone asked me what happened to all the cowboys when the
big Cattle Drives ended so I figured I'd talk about that for a short
spell.

First of all, why did the Cattle Drives come to an end? There were
two main reasons and they both happened at the same time. The
first reason is that the railroads were stretching farther into new
territories closer to the ranges which had the cattle, primarily
all of Texas.

That's just a fact folks, we supplied the entire country with beef,
generally speaking. So instead of having to drive the cattle to
Dodge City from South Texas, they could be driven to Dallas for
instance, very large difference in distance, just look at a map.

The second reason is that thousands of permanent ranches
were forming and those ranchers didn't want huge numbers
of cattle being driven through their pastures and lands because
they needed that for their own cattle.

So they put up barbed wire fences that looked like this:

So what did the Cattle Drives do when they suddenly came upon
barbed wire fences? They cut the wire and drove the cattle on
through of course!

This is what caused what they call The Range Wars. I might do a
post on that sometime but basically what amounted to a few
skirmishes and some people DID get killed, it wasn't what you
could call a WAR.

Of course Hollywood saw it differently and many movies ..let's
just say "embellished" the truth. But for a time is WAS a serious
situation and there was a great deal of tension between the
ranchers driving the cattle and the ranchers with permanent
homesteads trying to protect their grass from being over-grazed.

Because the cattle herds weren't just walking along for 4 or 5
months...they were like us, they ATE while they moseyed along
lol. am I right? would you walk all day without eating if you had
the chance to eat? Not a chance.

Fuel. A body's gotta have fuel! And so it was no different for these
big guys. So obviously this wasn't going to work. With increasing
problems with fencing and the progression of railroads into the
formerly railroadless areas, the cattle drives were deemed ..not the
best choice.

They didn't go the way of the Dinosaur right away however. There
were still smaller Cattle Drives traveling shorter distances. And I
might add, with negotiations with many ranchers along the way.

See.. Texans work out their problems amongst themselves..
after a few dozen people were killed. But we didn't need the Feds
to help solve the problem.

So what did these Cowpokes do when their way of life was suddenly
taken away? And remember, one third of these were Black men with
like..ZERO chance of getting a job that was slightly above slavery..
at that time.

Well they went to work for the breeders and cattle ranchers which
ran all these big herds except all the free ranges were being fenced
off so they became permanent ranch hands working for the ranches.

What I found interesting is that for some reason they started holding
competitions between ranches for all the skills which they used on
the cattle drives like roping, riding bucking horses, herding,
branding. They quickly became annual events at the ranches.

But what really made them popular were the Wild West shows put
on by Buffalo Bill which featured cowboys doing all these things like
roping and throwing down calves and such. One of the most famous
cowboys was a Black man named Bill Picket.

I'm out of time for tonight folks and my internet connection keeps
going out so I will take this up tomorrow on what this developed
into.

thanks so much for reading, God bless you all!

Thank you for the story @janton. I'd like to hear more about Bill Picket and I'm sure your are gonna tell us next time just as soon as the heat spell cools off a little and the wifi gets back.

The redneck quote at the end reminds me of the Davy Crockett song:

Born on a mountain top in Tennessee,
Greenest state in the land of the free.
Raised in the woods so's he knew every tree,
Killed him a bear when he was only three.

Davy, Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier.

This guy got his fur selfie

haha! you find the wildest stuff man! and you're tellin me you reminder that old Davy Crocket song? or did you look up the words?

I remember hearing these words on Disney when I was a kid. Can you forget those lines? Shocking for a six year old. And yes I did check to make sure they were accurate.

hahaha! man you must have a photographic memory. I remembered them when I read them but wouldn't have been able to recall them all like that.

All good things come to end with the advancement of our so-called civilization. Sure things were tough back in the day but I do think the way of life was less complicated. If you had a disagreement you settled between yourselves. Now the lawyers and governments get involved. Things take years to settle with loads of time and money being spent on both sides.

With the politicians and lawyers getting richer.... >:(

you are right sir..for once.

Even a blind hog get an acorn every now and then, LOL! ♡♡♡

hahaha! that's very true!

WHY I would want a bitter acorn is beyond me right now.... :)

you are so right @cecicastor! dang lawsuits and everything cost a bloody fortune!

Sorry about your internet! some of the big ranches up this direction hosted shows on the property. I stopped by one (long since gone) up by Blackwell, OK; and noticed the ranch house foundation was still sound, complete with a concrete block shaped room. That room was obviously a safe. There was another larger room across the road, that looked like a jail. Up on a hill, to the south was a small overgrown cemetery with just a few headstones. I cleaned away the weeds, and it was the ranch owner and wife (I think) with some ranch hands.

I asked about it in town, and they told me that the 'jail' was where they kept the bear they used in the shows. No one knew what happened to the ranch house, but I didn't see any burned wood, so it must have rotted from lack of maintenance.

Sad and lonely, but somehow proud too! :(

yes sir that is very interesting and sounds like maybe you were born in the wrong century.

If I knew what I know, a century ago....
:)

you'd be ruling the world!

Or at least well off, LOL! :)

I have been building stuff from junk for so long, I would have a Good time! :)

yeah you would but I don't know if everyone else would, you'd freak them out!

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

You got haiku botted again...twice in one night! :D

Scare a few maybe, it would be a wild ride!
If I could take back a few things, it would bust things wide open, LOL! :)

like change the world kind of things?

I am learning so much from the cowboy posts. Keep them coming

thank you sir, maybe someday I'll learn something from yours as well. lol. just teasing, that reminds me I gotta go visit the Farmer! yay!

I wouldn't mind being that guy sitting there in the shade of his horse and take in that ambiance for the afternoon. Interesting part of history.

that guy sitting....oh yeah that guy was from the late 1800's and he was sitting there thanking God that he lived in Texas and not in Florida. at least that's what the note under the photo said, I don't know why they would make something like that up so I assume it's true.
wow the coyotes are howling tonight, just heard a bunch of them start up.

From what I understand the range wars continue.
To bad the days of you word is your pond are scattered, few and far between

I don't know what you mean by "the range wars continue" where are they continuing at?

Texans work out their problems amongst themselves.

As long as you were not a damn sheep herder :)

Texas is # 1 Nebraska #2 Kansas #3 Texas cattle cannot be exported, Only Kansas Beef can be. Because their cattle are more educated and not as lazy :)

haha! I did not know that sir, that is truly enlightening! lol
I didn't know that there were lazy cattle either!

Damn things are so lazy you can walk up to one give it a little push and they will tip right over. Just make sure it not a bull

Here give this a try
Initiative Q is building a new payment network and giving away significant sums of their future currency to early adopters. It’s by invite only and I have a limited number of invites. My personal invite link: https://initiativeq.com/invite/HWQhPl3Em

haha! ok I signed up my wife to the Q payment thing.
how do you verify it?

I used my gmail account, got an email and just clicked on it. the person who sent you the invite only has 5 invites so if they were used already have to get someone else to invite you. I have 1 invite left. we will see who is the 1st to respond to it

ok that's great thank you!

Another interesting cowboy post @janton :) And now that you have your photo sourcing sorted out (someone smart must have shown you that :), I'm passing your post on to c-squared in the hopes that they pay you a visit.

well well well....look who decided to pay a visit on her day off.
I can scarcely contain my joy.
lol. hey girl you did fantastic on the League! how do you take a day off and then blast to 3rd place? what the???
super fingers there. well thanks so much about c-squared. when I saw Glen get Curied Friday or yesterday I thought man, I give up because I just don't have the original material that these guys want.

which is fine, if I ain't got it I ain't got it, it will just take me longer to get to the top and I can't catch ya'll but that's fine. but maybe c-squared's not as strict so thank you! I was so glad that Glen recaptured his CL title, that one is going to be hard to beat but he'll probably beat it next week.
you did awesome.

hey have you ever done a SBI thing? I was getting ready to then someone said that to make it go through you had to copy something to Google Drive and something else? I don't even know how to do that. can't they make things easy? I suppose you're getting ready to go to bed.

hey I've been doing the photo sourcing thing for many days now. someone brilliant did show me that.

oh, plus someone told me they were going to show me something about Ginabot also which I finally got going.

Congratulations to you! First place again! I actually ended up taking almost three days off. If I ever do a 7-day steemit week, well, you know where I'm going with that!

C-squared isn't as strict, but it's often a little payout...it's the recognition I think that's important.

SBI: no google drive blah blah. You just sent via your wallet 1 steem to sbi with a name in the memo line of who it's going to. That's it. Simple.

You're lucky to have had such a great teacher :) Photo sourcing, ginabot, sbi...wow. She must be brilliant :)

Actually, I'm not going to bed, but Brian and I are just hanging out :)

ok..you took three days off?? what the? well, let me know when you're doing 7 and I'll take a break that week!
ok send a steem to steembasicincome and that's it?
and you said you were going to show me something about ginabot too or was that just talk? lol

I'll be sure and keep it a surprise if I ever have a 7 day steemit week like that :)

sbi, yes, that's it. They're meant to give away to people. Each time you give one, you get one too.

Here is a post I wrote a long time ago about ginabot. I thought I gave this to you already, but if not, my bad :)

Have a great night, and I'm sure I'll talk to you tomorrow !

talk to me tomorrow right! by the time you get through talking to Glen it will be midnight. thanks for the post though!

That's interesting that they ended up competing with the permanent ranchers. It makes sense though.

I don't own a fur coat. And so it can't be homemade.

rats! figures. but if you did it would be homemade?

Only if I could make it out of rooster!

what the?? don't tell me you're another homesteader?

I'm not a homesteader, but I know some people who have roosters that are annoying me right now. I wouldn't actually make anything out of rooster... although, chicken is delicious. I wonder if the roosters are annoying me because they know I had chicken for dinner. Hmm....

roosters can be very smart in that way.

I'd like to my my tongue smart by putting some hot sauce on that rooster and eating it.

haha! me too actually!

amazing picture, I like it !
I hope so you visit my blog. Welcome !

Howdy and good evening!

What I found interesting is that for some reason they started holding
competitions between ranches for all the skills which they used on
the cattle drives like roping, riding bucking horses, herding,
branding. They quickly became annual events at the ranches.

Any chance you're talking about the first rodeos? ;)

yes sir! my next post! very good sir, how are you today? did you post today?

I did! We had a very busy and productive day here on the homestead. Lots of pictures and lots of progress!

thank you that's exciting, I'm heading over there.

I am thinking the the competition between ranches was the beginning of rodeos @janton.

that's pretty good thinking angiemitchell!

Another great post! Hey, I see your new image sourcing method. I just looked it up. Easy. Especially if all the images are from the same source. cool!

thank you squirrelbait and good Monday to you! yes the photo source thing just makes it look so much cleaner.

Hi @janton. Another interesting piece.Look forward to the Range wars now. I can understand the ranch owners fencing off their land to keep their own livestock in it and secure. Was there a lot of cattle theft in those days because you could intentionally trap cattle that doesn't belong to you in your perimeter fencing.

thank you cryptoandcoffee..I don't think cattle theft was a big business but then I haven't seen any numbers on it, I don't think they kept much in the way of records back then so some things are a little murky.

Cowboys & cattle drives.. just another lost skill to the industrial revolutions and progression of automation.

I swear some days I think I was born a century too late.

haha! that's very interesting @goldendawne! you would enjoy the more slowed down version of life and you'd be this reknowned and well sought after Herbalist!

I recently watched a movie that was about the range wars. It was pretty good too. Sad I can’t remember the name of it. I suppose this furthered the rodeos all over Texas. Good story. 🐓🐓

good morning @mother2chicks! seen any cool old trucks in the country lately? thank you for the kind words and let me know if you remember the name of that movie!

The name of the movie is called “The Son” with Pierce Bronson. You should look up saltgrasstrailride.com for the oldest trail ride in Texas promoting the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. 🐓🐓

oh I love The Son on AMC but it's a series, waiting for them to start the 2nd season. It's very interesting because they are accurate in much of the Comanche history in dealing with whites, fighting and so on with things that happened in Texas.
yes I looked that up the last time you mentioned it, very interesting stuff.

It was a really good series and I too look forward to the second season of “The Sons”. Pressing on about the salt grass trail ride, it was tradition when I lived in Houston to drop everything we were doing and cheer them on as all of the trail riders associations converged on the city for the rodeo. 🐓🐓

was that in the winter? I hope? I could tell it was a big deal. why did you guys leave Texas?

Yes, the rodeo starts in late January or early Feb. I think. We left cause both of my parents lived here and I wanted to be closer to them. Both have since passed, but both of my Sisters are here too. Still Love Texas, but have a nice home here in rural Florida. Not far from the University of Florida. 🐓🐓

howdy this fine Tuesday @mother2chicks! hey how long ago did you move and have you been back? I was just wondering if things have changed alot in case you went back.

Dang sod-busters dun went an messed ever-thang up, with them thar fences.
Does a coonskin cap count for a redneck?

hhaha! yes a Coonskin cap could definitely count for a redneck!

Whew, I was getting worried... got to pass at least one test a week.
I think I have one in the basement I got from the Alamo 20+ years ago. One of those keepsake things so I can remember the Alamo... lol

hahaha! you have a Davy Crockett hat from the Alamo?
I bet it looks like a million bucks on you! lol.

I'd be surprised if it still fit... I was probably 12 or 13....
I remember it was a bit under-whelming, much smaller than I thought it would be. Probably some more of that movie fluff, making it larger than it is.

you're saying you have a big head or something?

lol, it has grown a bit in the last 25-30 years.

that's good as long as it's full of brains!

Another good read, my friend. Really enjoyed it.

You might REALLY be a redneck if the fur coat you made at home still needs to eat from time to time.

haha! that's great, I should hire you to write redneck jokes!

I'll take it!

I'll draw up a contract when I hit rep 75

LOL...you got it, boss!

thank you so much @c-squared! God bless you!

Good article will be waiting for the next half ,
One question though , Is your fur coat homemade? 😂

hahaha! I wish I had a fur coat but I don't. do you?

I don't have it either, does that exclude us from the redneck league already? sad

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

no no no! there are many other things about us that qualify us as rednecks thank goodness! lol
ha! redneck league..that's a darn good one Hananali!

If you go in detail of all the requirements to qualify then am afraid if I'll ever make it 😂 lol
Or make it a little easy for me o qualify 😂

Okay let's start a redneck league and whoever wins gets to be a redneck 😂

most of us already are rednecks though!

Okay but not me, is there a contest which I can win to get in the redneck league? After seeing their creativity in most of Your posts, I can't keep myself out of it :D

there is a little bit of redneck in you too, just haven't discovered it yet.

you're my favorite history teacher @janton :) <333

yay! I'm someone's favorite something! not the most desired thing to be but it's better than nothing so I'll take it. lol.
so you didn't zone out huh? I'm just trying to make history not be boring.
how is your day going? what do you do all day? I keep asking these questions and never get any answers. lol. like some mystery girl back in the woods.

lol today i might have to make a dreaded trip to massachusetts...not entirely looking forward to that but sometimes its just gotta be done. we'll see how it goes! other than that..so far today is a milder day, not having to run too many errands. Mostly housework, probably some forest work later if I don't have to go to mass of course. I have been getting lost in my creative flow in the past few days (about a week now) when I've had some free time. so there's that haha :) whats on the agenda for history lessons today Cowboy? :) hehe

This comment was made from https://ulogs.org

yay! I am blessed to hear from you during the day. but you create a few questions that make me quite curious..for instance..why do you have to go to Massachusetts?

and what does this mean? .."if I don't have to go to mass of course"..of course? like I'm supposed to know what that means? what mass? the mass as in density? Catholic Mass? Now you're a Catholic? oh my gosh you may need intensive counseling. I'll do it for free but it has to be in the forest or the country in a peaceful environment... optimally surrounded by fairys.

I don't know if there will be a history lesson today, probably not but not sure, have no idea. Yesterday's was about tornadoes. oh did you see the post about the Amish? Love those photos. but then yesterday's had stunning photos that people are talking about.

write this evening and let me know how it went to today and what happened.
