Yes, that's right, over 1000 Nazi's came to work inside the USA after WWII as part of Operation Paperclip. These included mostly scientists, but also doctors, technicians and engineers. Some were close collaborators with Hitler, involved in or responsible for murder, human experimentation and other crimes.
The reason? The Soviet commies were the next threat, and these former Nazi's had a lot of brain power. The USA needed all the brain power to win the coming "cold war". By doing so, they also prevented the Soviets from getting access to them, as well as prevented Germany's post-war development. The Red threat (communism, Soviets) was a main reason to inject all these Nazi's into the US establishment. Fear drove alot of decisions.
The USSR also had a similar program, nabbing over 2000 Germans in Operation Osoaviakhim.
Despite President Truman forbidding former Nazi's from being recruited, they were. Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency (JIOA) fabricated false employment records and biographical data for the scientists in order to circumvent Truman's anti-Nazi order.
The USA wanted all military research to cease as part of a de-Nazification process. That is, as long as the Germans were doing for Germany, Russia, or anyone else. Getting the Germans do continue military research for the USA, was very acceptable. Former SS were even hired to spy on and torture Soviets. The Nazi scientists proposed putting nuclear bombs onto ICMBs that they would also design. This led to the rockets for NASA, and NASA was headed by former Nazi's. Even MK-Ultra mind experiments were a continuation from earlier Nazi experiments.
After WWII, a lot started to go downhil for the USA in terms of freedom and honesty from the government. The OSS become the CIA. The NSA was later developed. More and more "security" and "defense" sectors popped up (i.e. weaponry). The Department of War was even transformed into the Orwellian Department of Defense, in name alone.
The USA can be said to have become the 4th Reich. There are many atrocities now being carried out, and most people in the homeland are blind to it, as usual.

Great article!! I'm a sucker for WW2 history and this piece sheds a lot of light on the dark history of the US government, CIA, NSA, NASA, etc. In fact, this historical fact was even referenced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier; how HYDRA infiltrated the US government. I know that chemotherapy is just mustard gas rebranded. People have known how to cure cancer for years, but by all means, let's keep using mustard gas instead. Higher prices line pharma pockets, and we don't have to deal with nearly so many people actually becoming healthy again and not needing to buy treatments anymore.
