What was daily life like in ancient greece?

in history •  7 years ago

Much of what we know about how the Greeks lived comes from pictures on vases. The pictures not only show wars and stories from mythology, but also daily activities such as hunting, farming and fishing. Greek homes were built around a central courtyard, cool and airy, where the family slaves prepared food on an open fire. There was a small shrine to the household god. Many houses were built without windows in the outside walls. This design kept out both the hot sun and thieves. People ate with their fingers while lying on wooden couches. Slaves brought in the dishes of food, while a musician played on pipes or a lyre. Men and women wore a chiton, a cloth square draped over the body and fastened by a pin at the shoulder.
