There is a difference between the quantity taken over from No 67 Sqn at Kallang in Singapore
One says 21 plus 4 attrition spares, another says 17 with no mention of spares,
488 Sqn RAF at the time of the invasion was not yet fully operational.
By 25 Dec 1941 there were 16 A/C left.
First Combat was 12 January 1942, 2 lost, 5 damaged, and No Claims
By 23 January there was only 2 Buffalos remaining on 488 Sqn which were handed over to
243 Sqn and 488 Sqn was re-equipped with Mustangs
The Buffalo was the first Mono Wing Fighter to enter service with US Navy
27 Modifications had to be made to the Buffalo before it could be used in Battle
One of very few aircraft to be flown by both sides in the war.
Finland flew the Model B-239
In an attempt to improve the performance of the Buffalo some
Sqn’s removed all unnecessary equipment to lower the weight.
Even replacing the .5” machine guns with lighter .303” and reducing the ammunition and fuel loads.
