Carousels

There are merry-go-rounds that have been around for some time. Who doesn't love merry-go-rounds? They represent many different things to people. I remember going on these rides as a child. They were so much fun! Here are some of the oldest ones:

Flying Horses on Martha's Vineyard - built in 1876

Watch Hill Flying Horses, Westerly, Rhode Island - built in 1894
This is a rare seaside carousel as the horses are suspended from above. When the platform turns, the horses and their passengers swing out. There was no wide spread electricity and an actual horse originally powered it.

All Hollow Guild Carousel, Washington National Cathedral Grounds - built in the 1890's
The horses on the platform do not jump and stay still.

Prairie Village Carousel, Madison, South Dakota - built in 1900
This is another steam powered ride and the carousel features horses carved in Germany.

Weona Park Carousel, Northampton, Pennsylvania - built in 1900
This ride has three rows of animals which do not jump.

Weona Park Carousel includes a ring machine, one of only 20 remaining carousels that do.

C.W. Parker Carousel - built in 1901 in Leavenworth, Kansas and is now located in British Columbia

C.W. Parker Carousel is a steam powered carousel. It is registered as a national historic landmark.

Cass County Dentzel Carousel, Logansport, Indiana - built in 1902

Cass County Dentzel Carousel riders try to catch the brass ring and have their choice of tigers and goats.

Today with rides being bigger, faster and higher, it is the carousel that still brings back fond memories.
