According to the seismologists and volcanologists, Indonesia has 17% of most active volcanoes in the world and it contributed to its wonderful views. The country is susceptible to volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because of its geographical locations.

Krakatoa Island is located directly on the Subduction Zone wherein the Burmese plate and the Indo-Australian plate were colliding, causing one tectonic plate diving beneath another to the hot interior or core of the Earth. This incident made the crust or outer layer of the Earth to melt and the melted rocks find its way up to the surface resulting to volcanic eruption.

Unfortunately, in August 27, 1883, this uninhabited volcanic island erupted with the strength of a 150 million tons of DNT or Dinitrotoluene. This resulted in a tsunami which is twice the height of those in 2004, with the sound echoed around the planet or heard seven times louder and wiped out 167 towns and villages in Indonesia. It killed 36,417 people. The casualties were mainly due to the tsunami after the eruption.

Sadly, the names of the thousands of Indonesians who perished in the 1883 tsunami were not recorded and their details could not be found. But the names of the Europeans were widely published. Clearly, in those times inequality, greediness, and corruption already existed.

THE MAGMA FROM THE 1883 ERUPTION

The mixture of the dark magma created gas and pressure enough to cause the volcanic eruption.

Very informative @marifa. Thank you for sharing this history!

Wow I love those mountains

Thank you. Those are the craters and they are beautiful although the danger will always be there. I feel sorry for Indonesia because of its vulnerability to earthquake and tsunami and knowing what the Dutch have done to them for centuries is quite awful.

Yes.. I am sorry...

meep

What a big tragedy, but i love learning history, thanks for sharing

Thank you.

It seems to be really active! I was on Etna, but it is much more peaceful.

It's unpredictable but I like the views there.
