Koschei (old bones)is a familiar wicked character in Slavic myth and legend.Like Baba Yaga, he is regarded as the personification of evil. This skeletal figure is much feared because of his habit of abducting defenseless young girls, and because it is believed he is virtually impossible to kill. One of the best known stories about Koschei tells how finally meet his match when he is confronted by a brave warrior queenwho pursues him relentlessly in order to rescue her kidnapped husband.

THE MYTH
Once, a handsome young prince called Ivan was riding through the countryside when he cane upon hundreds of corpses strewn on a battlefield. Making inquiries he learn that this soldiers belonged to the army of Koschei the immortal who had been defeated and captured by the warrior queen Márya Morévna. Soon Ivan across the queen herself, and the two fell in love.They were married and went to live in Marya Morevna place, but after a time a queen had to leave for war once again. Before she departed, she showed a locked closet in a room in the palace, and told him he was never to open it.

After Márya Morévna had gone, Ivan could not ressist looking in the closet, so he found the key in unlocked it. Inside he saw a wizened old man chained to a post, begging for water. As soon as he had drunk his fill, the old man broke his chains and fled the palace, taking Ivan with him. When Márya Morévna found out what happened, she rode out to rescue her husband, but Koschei was waiting for her and cut her up into pieces before she could attack him. However Marya Morevna's shape changing brothers the falcon, raven, and the ealgle-sprinkled the water of life over her dusmembered body and revive her.In the meantime Koschei rode away with Ivan on his lightning past speed.

RESCUING IVAN
Márya Morévna knew that only one person possesed horses fast enough to catch up with Koschei Bába Yagá. The queen rushed to the witch, who gave her a sorry looking colt, which hardly seemed up to the task of pursuing Koschei. But as Marya Morevna rode the creature, it miraculously turned into a swift horse that soon caught up with the kidnapper. Grabbing Ivan Marya Morevna turnedthe horse and galloped off, with Koschei and pursuit. They races on through the forest, until Koschei's horse stumbled on a stone and threw it rider on the ground.Turning quickly Marya Morevna took her sword and ran it through Koschei before burning his body to be rid of him forever.Then the couple returned to their palace and lived in peace thereafter.

I love mythological tales. Just finished reading Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman -- loved it so much that I also bought the audiobook of Neil himself reading it aloud.
