A BRIEF HISTORY
NORTH ACEH DISTRICT
The history of North Aceh can not be separated from the history of the development of the Islamic Empire on the coast of Sumatra, namely Samudera Pasai located in Samudera Geudong Subdistrict, which is the first place of Islamic Religion presence in Southeast Asia. The Islamic kingdoms in Aceh had ups and downs, from the time of the Sriwijaya Kingdom, Majapahit, the arrival of the Portuguese to Malacca in 1511 so that 10 years later Samudera Pasai was also occupied, until the Dutch colonial period.
The de facto Dutch took control of Aceh in 1904, when the Dutch were able to capture the last bastion of the Aceh warrior Kuta Glee at Batee Iliek in Samalanga. With the Decree of Vander Geuvemement General Van Nederland Indie dated September 7, 1934, the Dutch East Indies government divides the Aceh region over 6 Afdeeling (Regency) led by an Asistent Resident, one of which is Affleefing Noord Kust Van Aceh (North Aceh Regency) North Aceh is now added by Bandar Dua Subdistrict which now includes Pidie District (North Aceh Monograph 1986, BPS and BAPPEDA Aceh Utara).
Afdeeling Noord Kust Aceh is divided into 3 (three) Onder Afdeeling (Kewedanaan) headed by a Countroleur (Wedana), namely:
- Onder Afdeeling Bireuen
- Onder Afdeeling Lhokseumawe
- Onder Afdeeling Lhoksukon
In addition to the Onder Afdeeling there are also some Ulee Balang Area (Zelf Bestuur) which can govern itself against the area and its people are Wee Balang Keuretoe, Geurogok, Jeumpa, and Peusangan headed by Ampon Chik.
During the Japanese occupation the Afdeeling term was replaced by Bun, Onder Afdeeling called Gun, Zelf Bestuur called Sun, Mukim called Kun and Gampong called Kumi. After Indonesia was proclaimed as an independent state, North Aceh was called Luhak headed by a Luhak Chief until 1949. Through the Round Table Conference, on 27 December 1949 the Dutch recognized Indonesian independence in the form of a State of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia consisting of several states. One of them is the State of East Sumatra. The Acehnese figures at that time did not acknowledge and were not subject to the RIS but were still subject to the Republic of Indonesia proclaimed on August 17, 1945.
On August 17, 1945 the Republic of the United States of Indonesia returned to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and enacted the Temporary Law of 1950 all states joined and the status changed to the province. At that time, Aceh was not a state, combined with the Province of North Sumatra. With the Emergency Law Number 7 of 1956 on the Establishment of Autonomous Regions at the Regency level in North Sumatra Province, the North Aceh Level II Region was formed which also belonged to the Province of North Sumatra.
The existence of Aceh under the Province of North Sumatra caused dissatisfaction with the Acehnese leaders who demanded that Aceh remain independent as a province and not under North Sumatra. But this idea is less supported by some people of Aceh, especially those outside Aceh.
This situation caused the anger of the Acehnese figure and triggered the DIMI rebellion in 1953. The rebellion was only extinguished after the arrival of Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Hardi to Aceh known as Missi Hardi and then produced the Special Region of Aceh. By the Decree of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Indonesia Number I / Missi / 1957, the Province of Aceh was born. By itself the Regency of North Aceh is included in the territory of the Special Province of Aceh. Based on Law No. 1 of 1957 and Presidential Decree No. 6 of 1959.
Regency of North Aceh is divided into 3 (three) Kewedanaan namely:
- Kewedanaan Bireuen consists of 7 districts
- Kewedanan Lhokseumawe consists of 8 Subdistricts
- Luck Lhoksukon consists of 8 districts
Two years later came out of Law No. 18 of 1959 on the Principles of Regional Government. Under the law, the area of kewedanaan is abolished and the sub-district area is directly under the District of the Level II Region. With the decree of the Governor of the Provincial Government of the Special Province of Aceh Number: 07 / SK / 11 / Des / 1969 dated 6 June 1969, the former territory of Bireuen is defined as a representative region of North Aceh Second Level District headed by a representative head who has now become a District Bireun.
Nearly two decades later, Law No. 5 of 1974 on the Principles of Government in the Region was replaced, with the Head of the Representative Representative being replaced with the Assistant Regent of the Second Level Region, so that the Bireuen representative area was changed to the Assistant Head of North Aceh Regent in Bireuen.
With the rapid development of Aceh Utara District, in 1986 the Kotif (City of Administrative) of Lhokseumawe was established with the regulation of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia Number
