Hitler's Order to Demolish The Eiffel Tower and The Person Who Saved It

We all love and marvel at the magnificence of The Eiffel Tower. But sometimes I wonder why Hitler who was known for destroying cities to rubble and demolishing historical monuments never cared to destroy The Eiffel Tower? Well actually he did give the orders to burn Paris to ashes, as he would later do the same to Germany in the form of The Nero Decree(named after the infamous emperor who allegedly engineered The Great Fire of Rome in AD 64). He had ordered explosives to be placed around The Eiffel Tower and other important Landmarks.

But when the Allies captured Paris those orders were neglected by the military governor, Dietrich von Choltitz, who surrendered instead of blowing up those monuments, and came to be known by some as the "Saviour of Paris".

If he had carried out that order, we wouldn't be able to marvel at the beauty of The Eiffel Tower, as captured by this picture.
