Mysteryobject (a pertified Worldwar sandbag)

in history •  8 years ago  (edited)

Something i find from time to time laying in the mud of the river around Antwerp, Belgium. It appears to be a rock, it's solid, has a structure that makes me guess this is something for the geologist.

Infact the explanation is quite different,
during the World wars bags were filled with sand.

Half a century later the bags are gone, leaving the sandstone,

with the motive of the bag inprinted in the sandrock and a thread of the bag visible and petrified.

A reminder of the not so distant past.

I find this fasinating. The thought that the person who filled that sandbag lived over 100 years ago and may have been killed in the war. Who was it? What were they like? Many questions that will never be answered.

Do you find anything else related to the war?

Sometimes Maninayton, bullets, i found a broken coffeemug once with a German swastika on it, an old revolver, which might be more from the first World war.
Usually some medieval bullets, leaden balls or 6000 year old flint tools, more chance of finding them.
Cheers!
