In the Western sector of the Canaima National Park, there is the Auyantepuy, one of the most famous tepuyes. (The tepuyes are those flat mountains that end with immense vertical walls.) From that tepuy Angel Falls is born, with its 979 meters of free fall, the highest in the world.

There are two ways to see the Angel Falls. One is from the air, by plane and the other is on an excursion that departs from the Ucaima port in Canaima, and lasts more than 3 hours navigating the Carrao river and then the Churún. From the Churún River, to the Angel Falls viewpoint, you should walk approximately one hour through the jungle.

However, the indigenous people of the area, the Pemones, had already known it before and had baptized it as Churún Merú.

The Angel Falls is 15 times larger than Niagara Falls, with a difference of approximately 52 meters.

This fall is named after Jimmy Angel, an adventurous pilot from Missouri, United States, who flew in the Lindberg Air Circus. James Crawford Angel (Jimmy Angel) is a modern legend. He saw the waterfall for the first time in 1933 with his partner, while searching for the legendary Rio de Oro, or the Golden City.

James returned again in 1937 with his wife and friend Gustavo Enrique Gardener, after an overflight on the top of the tepuy had to make an emergency landing on the summit of the Auyantepuy. The plane could safely reach the top of the Tepuy and stayed there for 33 years until it was rescued by a helicopter from the Venezuelan Air Force to be rebuilt as a tribute to the feat of Jimmy aNGEL.

Jimmy Angel and his three companions managed to descend from Tepuy and return to civilization, walking through the jungle for 11 days. the plane used by James Angel is currently in the Museum of Aviation in Maracay, and today at the top of the Auyantepuy is a replica of Jimmy's plane.
