Dota is a very complex game and also unique at the same time. Pesonanya make this game one role model MOBA game afterwards. But do you know the history of Dota until now? Let's look at Dota's history below!
Aeon of Strife and Birth Dota
Dota's history begins with the birth of a real time strategy game called Starcraft made by Blizzard. This game is very popular because it managed to bring real time elements in the game strategy genre, instead of playing alternately like chess.
In short, Starcraft itself tells the story of the battle of three nations in space namely Protos, Terran, and Zerg. The exciting competitive and mechanical level of Starcraft is instantly visible and attracts many people. Unfortunately, Starcraft is not so friendly to new players because of the complexity of the games it has.
As a solution, Blizzard provides World Editor so players can play various custom games created with engineStarcraft as the base. The result, in about 2000, Aeon 64 made a custom game called Aeon of Strife was born.
Aeon of Strife, a custom game from Starcraft, later became the main concept of Dota's creation by Eul. AoS carries several elements used by the modern MOBA at that time - the presence of three lanes, the player controlling one powerful hero, and the presence of items to add to the powerful hero played by the players. Although very innovative, AoS was not so popular in its time.
The presence of Warcraft: Reign of Chaos (ROC) in 2002 became a new chapter in Dota's history. Just like Starcraft, ROC is a real time strategy game with better graphics and also mechanical control that is more simple and easy to understand by many players.
Interestingly, ROC equipped with a World Editor like Starcraft. The presence of this World Editor sparked custom map makers to experiment on creating exciting games with Warcraft ROC as its base.
Eul, the Creator of Dota
Dota's history enters an important stage with Eul's presence, which tries to develop a game using ROC World Editor and brings the concept of a game like AoS.
Custom game that he named Defense of the Ancient, which then shortened to DotA. Eul's artificial dota is very innovative because it has brought the finishing element of AoS, and is still used even today!
First is the introduction of the level of hero that is played, so it is easier to increase the power of hero by finding the level. Second is the presence of neutral creep that gives the effect of gold and experience. Likewise the presence of respawn time that can provide benefits when one team managed to kill the hero of the opponent.
As the title suggests, the goal of Dota is actually to destroy the opponent's Ancient, but the complexity of the game presented by Eul as killing the opponent's hero, and searching for gold's level and excellence makes Eul's Dota very popular in his time.
Dota Allstars and Guinsoo
Unfortunately, Dota and Eul did not last long. In 2003, Warcraft: The Frozen Throne (TFT) was present and quickly shifted the game made with ROC as its base.
Eul also made the transition by creating Dota 2: Thirst for Gamma on TFT World Editor. Unfortunately, the custom game is not as popular as the original Dota and Eul immediately resigned and made the Dota folder open to anyone who wanted to use it.
This prompted the mapmakers to compete to develop the Dota left by Eul. Dota's history re-rolled in the 2004 TFT era when Meian and Ragn0r created Dota Allstars which is a combination of Dota's custom games and combines all of the existing heroes into one game.
Dota Allstars quickly gained popularity and loved the players online who were playing with Battle.net. Then came Guinsoo who decided to seriously develop Dota Allstars. Guinsoo successfully developed Dota Allstars from series 3.xx to series 5.xx.
Interestingly, in the 4.xx series, Guinsoo created Roshan, a non playable strong character and taken from the name of Guinsoo's bowling ball. Achievement of Guinsoo as Dota's developer is he manages to create jungle creep and mechanical items with recipe.
Not long after the success of Dota Allstars skyrocketed, Guinsoo joined with Pendragon who later created the Dota Allstars website. The presence of the website then becomes the backbone that brings together Dota players from around the world to interact.
As a result, the Dota Allstars 5.84 series became one of the most competitive series ever! This patch is often used as the main series in organizing a tournament, and is called the Dota competitive series.
Unfortunately, Guinsoo's role lasted in the 6.xx series in which he announced his resignation as the main developer of Dota Allstars. Dota's history enters a new chapter with IceFrog, the legendary developer who takes over.
Icefrog The Legend in Dota's History
After Guinsoo left, Neichus took over the development of Dota Allstars. Because Neichus did not have any expertise in programming, he finally called IceFrog who later worked with Neichus to develop Dota Allstars in series 6.xx.
Although his name has never been listed in the folder, Neichus has created many original characters such as Ax, Sand King, Morphling, Phantom Lancer, Ursa, Shadow Fiend, and more. He also created a courier that became one of the hallmarks of the Dota game!
Unfortunately, Neichus only briefly became the main developer Dota Allstars. He was quickly replaced by IceFrog who was an important person in Dota's history as well as taking over the title of major developer Dota Allstars.
Not long ago, IceFrog was faced with a problematic 6.xx series patch that was not played. The players are more loyal to the 5.84 series patch which is considered the most balanced and competitive series. IceFrog quickly and never give up modifying the next series to achieve the achievements obtained in 5.84 series.
The IceFrog principle is that there should be no items, heroes, or any combination of both over power. Balance is key to Dota Allstars development by IceFrog. He repeatedly performs balancing patches in order to balance the hero or items considered too OP.
As a result, the 6.77 series IceFrog succeeded in becoming the second Dota competitive series in Dota's history. This series is well-liked by the fans and make it its own achievement for IceFrog!
Dota Allstars success seems to bring trouble. The main problem is the limitations of Dota Allstars to develop because the game was created from the TFT World Editor. It was quickly realized that IceFrog began the arrival of competitors in the form of stand alone games such as Demigod and League of Legends.
The result, IceFrog in the end work together to develop Dota 2 with Valve, which proved successful in the market until now and became the most popular MOBA game in the world.
Dota's history does not stop there. There are still many decisive elements and factors that make Dota today one of the most popular games in the world!
