30 kilometers from Siena is a half-destroyed Abbey called San Galgano, which was previously owned by monks from the Cistercian order. It was built in the XII century in honor of the Saint, whose name was Galgano Guidotti.
The life of this knight at first could not be called righteous at all: he was dissolute, proud, indulged in vices and used violence against people around him. Once he had a vision of the Archangel Michael, but Guidotti ignored the vision without changing. But a little later he heard a voice from the sky telling him it was time to change his life. Galgano replied that it was as impossible as breaking a stone with a sword. Then he decided to demonstrate that this was impossible by trying to drive his sword into the stone. But the sword did not break, but went inside, and the villain was so amazed that he decided to repent and begin to lead a righteous life. As a result of stone sticking only the handle and a few inches of the blade, its shape very much like a cross.
According to legend, after the death of the knight, many people made attempts to steal the sword. Before our time preserved mummified hand one of the thieves who had bitten him during one of his wolves, according to legend, guarding the weapons. When some unscrupulous man last tried to steal a sword, he broke it, and now the weapon is secured with metal plates and reinforced with lead.
Historian M. Moiraghi, specializing in the middle Ages, believes that this story is based on the legend of king Arthur. To prove his point, the historian recounts what Guidotti's mother, Dionysus, told a meeting of cardinals deciding whether to canonize a knight who died in 1190.
As moriagi says, the woman laid out all the fundamental points on which the legend of the Round Table is based: the warrior who overcomes all difficulties on the way to his goal, his desire to find the Holy Grail (although in Guidotti's case it is not the Cup that Jesus held in his hands at the meal with the disciples, but a certain text, the meaning of which he could not unravel) and the most basic – the sword.
Guidotti's sword was examined by scientists. Previously they not believed in the, that weapons present, but recently managed prove, that composition metal and external kind of the sword virtually on 100% coincides with weapons, izgotovavshemsya in period with 1100 until 1200 s. This is actually a metal weapon, produced, apparently, in the years when the famous Saint lived. Therefore, it appeared before the legends of king Arthur were created.
By the way, in the process of research the Italian sword in the stone, it was found that under it there is some sort of hollow place. But the churchmen still do not allow to move the stone, so that experts can not learn all the secrets of the legendary weapon.
Today, the sword in stone stands under a protective glass dome in the chapel, and many travelers come there to see it with their own eyes.
