MARATHON 490BC
Persians invaded Greece. The Athenian army marched on to meet them. The 2 armies faced each other across the plain at Marathon. After 9 days the Athenians gathered on the plain, fanned out into battle line, then attacked. The panic- stricken Persians ran to their ships and were slaughtered. Outcome : The Greek victory saved Western civilization from being absorbed by the Orient.
SYRACUSE 413 B.C.
The Athenians sailed for Syracuse. Sicily. Athens was at the peak of its power. Unfortunately they were too confident. Cut of from supplies, they were trapped I the Harbour at Syracuse. Desperately to free themselves, the Athenian fleet was badly destroyed. Outcome : The Athenian Empire rocked by this disaster, began to fall apart.
ARBELA 331 BC.
A world empire was Alexander the Great's dream. Part of that dream was the conquest of Persia. The 2 armies met at Arbela. The Persian army included 15 elephants and 200 chariots. It was no match for Alexander's well equipped Macedonians. The Persians suffered total destruction. Outcome : The Persians was never able to threaten Western
civilization.
METAURUS 207 B.C.
The Roman's and Carthaginians had been at odds for control of the Western Mediterranean lands. This fighting carried on for 11 years. Carthage invaded Italy in 218 B.C At Metaurus the tide was turned by the Roman's. In furious battling Hasdrubal's army was utterly destroyed as a Roman Legion came from the back in a surprise attack. Outcome : The power of Carthage was broken.
Teoutoburg Forest. A.D.9
German tribes started a revolt against its Roman rulers. The Germans, led by young Arminius, tricked the Romans by having the Germans swooped down from hiding places and slaughtered the Romans. The Roman prestige received a fatal blow. Outcome : Rome could be beaten.
Chalons 451 AD
Europe faced a dangerous invasion in the 5th century. Attila the Hun came from the East, the "Scourge of God" and one of the most savage figures in history. His barbaric hordes destroyed everything they came upon. Finally, at Chalons they met the Romans and the Goths in a hand - to - hand struggle. Outcome : Attila was completely destroyed and Europe was saved.
Tours 732 AD
Europe again faced a dreadful threat to civilization. The Muslims invaded France. The Franks met the Arabs at Tours. The Muslims attacked mercilessly but could not break through the French lines. As the Muslims became tired, the Franks attacked. The Muslims were overrun. Outcome : Tours saved Western Europe from Arab rule.

Hastings 1066 AD
The English throne was claimed by William the Conqueror. He sealed to England to win his crown. He brought with him 7000 men. At Hastings he defeated the army of King Harold. The king was killed. William did become the king of England. He drew England closer to western Europe. Outcome : The blending of different cultures, the Norman French and the English Saxons.
These battles prove that they were necessary in shaping many important instances in the world. I have merely touched on a few, but will write about more battles in 2.
