Many authors consider the Schöberger 1892 pistol, also known as the Schöberger Laumann pistol, as the first semi-automatic pistol in history, patented in 1890. Although it was not commercially successful, it does not detract from the merit of having been the first semi-automatic, and the first to use smokeless powder.
