Anaximander whom according to history was the student of thales(610BC-545BC).
He was so popular in miletus and he wrote a book on the evolution of the world. And at this time people started to think more rationally in the sense that at this time poetry was rivaled by prose.
Anaximander just like thales thought that the ultimate constituent of the universe was only one thing and as I made it known when I talked about thales, that position is what we know as monism.
He thought that thales had not fully explained what is was to be explained by saying water is the ultimate constituent of the universe. He said water itself had to be explained because it is just one thing out of the many things that exist in the world. So water cannot define all other things like air, fire and other existents. So through him philosophical criticism started.
Anaximander after giving a destructive view of the explanations of thales, he then gave his own constructive view of the world just as all philosophers would have done.
He said that which defines and explain all things is "apeiron" this is an eternal, indefinite, and infinite entity which all things come from and would eventually return. This means boundless. This has no specific property and so it is undefineable.
He also believed that life came through at a sea side. Where first man was born out of a fishlike nature near the sea.
Anaximander could be said to be the first evolutionist by his theory of how life came about.
He moved in a more critical way rather than his teacher and that is how we think even the students of nowadays should be. We should be more critical but then what can we do when even the society is moving backwards and trying to let people know that philosophical rigour is irrelevant. A society like Nigeria. Of which humans cannot run away from this.
I believe philosophy answers all questions. Let's embrace criticality.
