Disturbing 80s kids TV

in history •  7 years ago

During the 1970s the makers of British TV shows for children were obsessed with providing content for children that was often spine tingly scary for no reason what so ever. Where in the rest of the world most children's programmes would have cheery intros that were attractive to children, encouraging them to watch in Britain they were quite often damn strange. This applied especially to schools TV, programmes often made by the BBC for school children to watch as part of their education.

The most notable of these was "Picture Box" a really very heavy watch that would often introduce animations and stories from around the world. These could be a really mad Romanian film made for Communist kids or an African fable about a mongoose, really nothing to do with the lives of your average British 8 year old. The most creepy thing about the programme wasn't the content...it was the introduction.

The introduction to Picture Box features a slowly rotating jewel covered box which seems to be playing a discordant, weird circus like tune. You almost expect it to be the introduction to a freak show or short story about a man who came back from the dead with two heads. Below is the introduction in question...don't have nightmares!
