Protect and survive

During the 1970s the UK government started to prepare for the events of a nuclear war should it happen. Part of that preparation was the production of a series of public information films that were meant to be shown on national TV during the build up to war. These were known as "protect and survive" and were in the same style as many public information films of the time, urging children not to play with matches or climb a electrical pylon. These were and are completely terrifying, giving very frank and disturbing instructions from how to escape nuclear fallout to how to dispose of a corpse should a loved one die in your nuclear shelter. As a child I first saw these films in 1983 and it haunted me for years , infecting my dreams and making me jump every time I heard a loud bang!

To experience just how disturbing these information films are here is "Protect and Survive - Casualties" an instructional video on how to bag up Grandma if she dies in the shelter.
