I found this to be interesting. This looks more like something out of the Lord of the Rings than reality. It's in the Hesse Region of Germany, which is my family name's origin, so i'm intrigued. It looks like It's built on top of something that has bloomed out of the earth, or something crazy...and far more ancient than claimed. This castle was built by William IX (Elector of Hesse) and honors the demi-god Hercules. (How odd, huh?). Allegedly, he built it to "appear as if it had been in battles"...even though it hadn't. It apparently was damaged in the second world war. I popped over to read a little about William and find his relationship with Mayer Amschel Rothschild a bit concerning. I've found much of the history surrounding the Rothschilds to be unreliable and it seldom ends well for their associates. I find it curious that UNESCO would designate it a World Heritage Site...If it is only a Monument. I'd love to visit and see the inside...if they allow that. I know wikipedia tends to be iffy, but they always seem to have trivial random clues and do a good job with footnotes. I appreciate their "see also"s.
This eagle is pretty cool.
