Characteristics of Bulguksa(佛國寺) Daewoongjeon (大雄殿) ; The Structure of The Foundation

in history •  7 years ago  (edited)

The main building in Buddhist temple is Daewoongjeon. It means Daewoongjeon, when we are talking about the tour on the temple.

_2050264.JPG

Each Daewoongjeon has it’s own specific characteristics.
In this respect, Daewoongjeon of Bulguksa also has it’s own.

What I want to introduce at first on Bulguksa Daewoongjeon is it’s structure of the foundation.
The reason why I’d like to introduce this foundation of building is because of my personal experience.

While touring on cultural place, I was always happy when I found out tiny things.
Yes, the foundation of the building looks like tiny thing to the experts of archeology or architecture.

But that small discovery and realization have guided me to continue my journey for this posting.

The structure of Daewoongjeon is quite different from other temples which had been built after Shilla dynasty.

The first characteristic is Bulguksa Daewoongjeon has different stone foundation from that of other temples.

The structure of the foundation must’ve been changed with the dynasties.

Bulguksa was founded in Shilla dynasty. But the wooden structure was burned by Japanese soldiers during Japanese invasion 1592.

So only the foundation of stone could be survived.

May be the stone foundation of Bulkusa is the only Architectural structure of Shilla dynasty.

So we can compare this foundation with other dynasties.

Let’s find out the cases of other temples in detail.

At first, let’s talk about the case of the temple of Goryeo Dynasty.
Only a few buildings of Goryeo dynasty have been survived until today.
I had posted one of this building last year.

The name of the temple is Sudeoksa (修德寺).

Then let’s focus on the foundation of the temple.
The foundation was piled up with the stone bricks well-trimmed.

20171005_153726.jpg

20171005_153737.jpg

They are both looked similar that the foundation was made with the stones.

But the style of Bulguksa Daewoongjeon is different from that of Sudeoksa.

The stone of Bulguksa Daewoongjeon is not piled with the stone bricks.
The stone panels were attached on the surface of the foundation.

스크린샷 2018-03-06 오후 5.52.08 복사본.png

The style is looked like Seokgatap
Look at the foundation of Seokgatap pagoda.
The stone foundation of Seokgatap is as same as that of Daewoongjeon.

Yes, the style of architecture on the foundation is both similar.

This stone panel means that the foundations of both buildings are wooden style.

_2050234.JPG

스크린샷 2018-03-06 오후 6.21.43.png

Then with a time passing, the wooden panel looked like to turn into the stone panel.

In this point, we could arrive at next conclusion that the Seokgatap was built after the wooden pagoda.

In other hands, the style of Choson Dynasty was quite different from Shilla and Goryeo dynasty.
The temple of Choson Dynasty could not be escaped from the influence of Confucian Philosophy.

The humble and simple life style was very important virtue in Confucian Philosophy.
Due to Confucian influence, the temple of Choson dynasty was built in humble style.

Below is SSanggyeosa temple which was posted last year

The foundation of stone bricks were not neat.

Look at the cornerstone untouched. But there is a secret in architectural technique.
I wish post this secret next chance.

Korean architectures look similar at first glance, but if you look at more carefully, you can find out the differences of each buildings bring you pleasure.

Super Beautiful

Amazing.

You are lucky to be in this place. Where is this exactly? I couldn't find. :D

I am posting on Bulguksa in Korea

Budhismand Confucianism really influenced the way Koreans live their lives too with such attention to perfection and detail as we all see now from Korean lifestyle and discipline and how they do their work @slowwalker

Yes, exactly

Unbelievably beautiful Korean architecture among hills (it seems). I am curious to know how it looks from inside. Did you get a chance to take photos of this building from the inside? It would be interesting for the readers if you make one post about it.
Great job!

Interesting post! I was just wondering what this structure was made for. It is in between the other buildings at the center and also fenced. Does that withold a purpose, there are similar pillar like structures at all the Hindu temples which still has its true reasons to be uncovered.

Oh, You get to close at my secret.
You might have eagle's eyes

hahaha thank you! I am really interested in this man, mind shelling out your secret? xP
I have been travelling and recording these things from my childhood and mysteries keep my heart pumping. Here's a similar structure with a different form of architecture you might wanna look into if you are doing your research @slowwalker

Thank you for reading

As always, a great story about Korea's culture and history!

;))

I think that emotional content is an image’s most important element, regardless of the photographic technique. Much of the work I see these days lacks the emotional impact to draw a reaction from viewers, or remain in their hearts.

Thank you for your feedback
It is not easy to take photos of the emotional impact
But I'd like to try

wow amazing post,,,very interesting and historical publication sir. waiting fore more of this kind of post from you.

yes history begins with the ground , very nice photography, always very mystic, I can imagine to mediated with a candle next to the building or in the building, does not matter :)

Just sitting there is enogh

every building that has a history of time in the wake must be very sturdy, and will be a building for future generations, I am glad to be able to read success for @slowwalker

Thank you so much

you are welcom my friend ,, have a nice day..😀😀😀😀😀

wow, as someone who works in construction I really like to see so old buildings! How difficult must it been for them to build it? unbelievable! Great post @slowwalker!

;))

Thank you for sharing, about the old building is still well maintained, I am amazed the foundations are nice and sturdy

Yes, the foundation is very important in Korean Architecture.
It protects the wooden parts from water under the ground

Old buildings like these are fascinating. It's a form of art that is almost lost. And to think they were build so many years ago, without the technology we have today, all hard work and sweat and creativity. Gorgeous.

the history of budhist people is very rich and terrific, alot of things to discover in your blog, wonderful work

cmon whats the secret :)

南无阿弥陀佛

Everything is so beautifully crafted, yet indeed looks beautifully humble. I can't imagine what it would have been like to see the artists/ builders at work at that time.
It must have been a very peaceful place to walk around.
Thank you for sharing these great posts.

Thank you for dropping by

wow, amazing, beautiful photography too xxx

Interesting observations about the subtleties of ancient architecture. This is so wonderful when the cultural heritage of past centuries can remain in its original form to the present day. I imagine how much it affects a person to be able to touch such ancient things, to feel his connection with past generations. In my village, too, there are some very ancient remains of former settlements and times. It's important to me, I'm proud to be able to see these things and learn the specifics of my ancestors ' lives. You're doing a great job, telling us about the culture and history of Korea. Thanks to your blog I found out that this is a country with a great and interesting history.

Thank you for your support.

a very nice place @slowwalker,, I liked his,
if there is spare time will you see me to see my post ??

Very informative content. It was great to know more about Korean cultures. And i am amazed the structural design of the temple. And we will wait for that secrets to reveal on your next post.

I really agree with your last sentence, Korean architectures look similar at first glance but they are all different and have their own beauty!
Some of my foreign friends even think Korean architectures look similar to other Asian countries' architectures, but the more I study Korean buildings the more I understand their unique beauty.
Interesting article, thanks !

Yes, exactly

Great post buddy! Have a great day! -Dan

Hahaha,
Have a nice trip.
I envy you. I'd like to travel all around the world like you

Beautiful buildings. It's the shape of the roofs that gets me every time, maybe because we don't have that sort of shape here at all.

A secret? Are you using cliffhangers now as well? 8-)

;))

What an architecture here, humble and simple lifestyle just mix in well with nature and the feeling I get when I read and see these photos. It's like a time and space travel for me, and I thank you for that.

Much love, Mr. Spacely

I never thought about the architecture of the Buddhist temples, it is a good subject to investigate, I hope soon the secret of the architectural technique. :)

:D Thank you for visiting

Very good history dear brother and resteemit your post

Wow amazing 🤗

There is so much to discover here. Some interesting history and heritage for us. What I see common in all these Temples is the very strong foundation, most of them stone foundation which has helped them stand up till today's age despite of so many centuries of diferent type of exposure. The different structure so well describes by themselves the life style of their periods. Thank you for sharing.

i like your post vary much and thanks for shear this history.💜👏

I jinja like korea

Thanks for the story and photos. It was very interesting! Waiting for a new secret about architectural technology )

Thank you so much

The building of the temple was indeed made with very thorough and strong and very resistant until now. I am also still confused what technology they use to make a strong building.
If you like the temple you have to visit Borobudur temple in my country very unusual. @slowwalker
