Closer Observation of Geun Jeong Jeon, The meaning of the Phoenix and the Dragon

Now let's look up Geun Jeong Jeon closer. This Palace is the main building for the official ceremonies. The important decisions and laws were announced in this building. It looked very beautiful but it has it's specific meaning in this building.

There was a mountain behind the building. In korean architecture the mountain behind a house is very important. The front of the house should be located to Southern direction. And the mountain must be located in the Northern Part. This location seemed to be due to the climate characteristics of korea. They had protected cold winter blowing from north with mountain from the north.

They have built house for Southern direction due to the sunshine.
As the angle of sunshine degree is low in winter, the sunshine could enter into the deepest part of the house. In opposition, as the angle of sunshine is high, the sunshine could not enter into the house.

There were marking stones on the ground. The officials had stood next to the marking stones of their rank. In official meeting, nobody could enter into the main building. Kings voices were delivered by an officer in attendance on.

When you get closer to Geun Jeong Jeon, there was a magnificent stone steps.

It looks great, but it has it's specific meaning.

You can look at the statue of some animals, which are imaginary creatures to protect bad energy and evil.

You could look at the Phoenix on the steps.

It means king. In koryeo dynasty, they called their king as a emperor. But in Choson Dynasty, they called king a kng. In confucian political system. Emperor was higher than King. In Koryeo Dynasty, they thought their king as same degree as chinese king,
But in Choson dynasty, they accepted the superiority of chinese political power. So they lowered their political status from emperor to king.
The phoenix was a symbol of that political change.

But the end of the 19C, when China was weaken, Korea broke the political relationship with China due to the complicated internation affairs. At that time, they called their king as a Emperor again.

The symbol was dragon, they installed dragon symbol on the ceiling of the main building.

Interesting thing was that the painters had drawn dragons every place. They would not like to accept their Emperor downgraded as a king.

Very nice pictures..now i know..thank you for the post...

As Shakespeare said, @slowwalker, there is a tide in the affairs of men - sometimes it leads on to fortune, as it did to China during the Choson dynasty.

China's power was greater than Korea's so the Korean Emperor was degraded to a mere king.

But tides change and in time, the influence of China declined and the Korean King was once again elevated to the status of Emperor.

The power struggle is clearly depicted in the mythical animals carved into the steps of the palace.

The phoenix represents an era of peace under a benign king, but that changes when the king over time becomes the dragon-- the Emperor, and Korea rises again as a world power.

The photos today are strikingly beautiful, in particular, the close-ups of the dragon paintings on the palace ceiling.

An informative and entertaining post, my friend.

Thank you so much

Nice @slowwalker
I fond arabesque in there.
I want to trace back to digital for arabesque.

Beautiful dragons!

And it seems that the imaginary creatures were being used in many parts of the building.

I have been to Seoul and have actually visited the palace. Even the tour guide did not give such an interesting and detailed narration. When I travel I liked to learn about the culture of other countries. You article really help me to understand the Korean culture.

wo man! thats great

I am interested in the intelligence of the ancients, in building a building that looks at the layout with consideration of the changing seasons and the sun, I think it's amazingly clever, and the problem of changing the king's status in the choson dynasty is interesting too, perhaps because part of the choson dynastic diplomacy of friendship china in ancient times. And finally they call the king back as emperor .., thanks for sharing knowledge of korean history .. Very interesting.. @slowwalker

good post ..
my friends once help get into my blog. i really need your help sasbat

My goodness, what a fascinating post on so many levels. First, I can't help but comment that some of those design principles are simply good building energy management principles. 😊 But on a more profound level, the reaction of the painters to changes in political and empirical rule playing itself out in what must have been an act of creative bravery (with the beautiful dragons on the ceiling) - it's inspirational. In the face of overwhelming power, to stand up or raise one's brush for what's right is so brave. Thank you for sharing this amazing photography and story. Oh yes, and a Phoenix. I hope you explain that soon - I'm looking forward to it. 😊😊

The details of the dragon was mind blowing. But intricate stone carvings on the steps are a true work of art. Wow!!! =)

The palace has amazing architecture. The roof in the shape of the boat is the most fascinating. Statues of animals had a big job protecting from bad energy and evil. Dragons are so lovely
