SLAVE TRADE IN SOUTHERN NIGERIA

in history •  7 years ago  (edited)

Tears rolled down my eye while I made research about the slave trade of my ancestors, the inhuman treatment they had to go through from the hands of slave masters.
In the now Akwa ibom State, there are many landmarks that are preserved in memories of the hardship faced by our lost fathers and mothers. Amongst all of this is the historical BRIDGE OF NO RETURN

Located in Ikot Abasi, Akwa ibom State, Nigeria

She was given the name by her locals, because slaves(humans turned to animals) were walked down the Bridge to a canoe for onward movement to the Slave ship that layed at the middle of the high seas waiting for their human cargoes for onward movement through the Atlantic Ocean.
No slave the walked down the Bridge ever returned. The was a perfect representation of horror for the locals.

Just by the bridge is a container of castes concrete built by the edge of the bridge with two tiny holes at both ends, this serves as bunk for slaves and the tiny spaces was for receiving air, after stucking hundreds in such a tiny space.

Humans where kept in such misery for days and month awaiting their ship to Europe, never to see their fathers, mothers, siblings, relatives, friends, love ones and home again.
Every one lived in fear, with hopes that they won't be traded. They couldn't migrate, for they also feared that they will be kidnapped on the pad and turn to slaves, so they lived in fear of the unknown. image

This form of slave trade ended a long time ago in my community and this location has become a tourist attraction. Slave trade never stopped but took an evolved form.
***This new evolved form of slavery involves relative and strangers. Where parents and relative give out their young ones for service and the monthly income is sent back to them, not considering what kind of service they will be asked to render ***

Most of them are turned into sex toys, starved, sent to other countries for prostitution, beaten, hawk and deprived education. They are simply been treated as animals, most of them accused to be witches and witchcraft, most of them killed carelessly without explanation. The families are less concerned, so far the monthly income keeps coming in. They use poverty as a leverage for their actions ![image](https://img.esteem.ws/7iiuqkdp40.jpg)

This kids are forced to be thieves, killers and they waste away due to slave trade. They become hoax in the community and country at large.

Today ,we celebrated the end of slave trade at the **bridge ** ,but unknown to us she didn't disappear but rather took another face and form of existence.
