Welcome to today's episode of the "Today in History" serial, where I bring you daily historical facts and events of the current date.


On February 17. 1774. the American painter Raphael Peale was born.

Raphael was born in Annapolis in Maryland and grew up in Philadelphia.
His father, Charles Wilson Peale was also a famous painter, who also trained him in arts.

In 1795. at the age of just 21 years old, Raphael had his first exhibition, held at the Peale Museum (founded by his father) where he presented multiple of his portraits and other paintings.

In 1809. Raphael was diagnosed with delirium and has been suffering debilitating attacks throughout the rest of his life.
Starting in 1810. he started focusing on painting still life, and his painting since have been almost entirely still life paintings and became the first professional still-life painter in America.

He held most of his exhibitions in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
As his health was getting worse, he was unable to walk without crutches by 1813.

His health was getting worse as time passed and Raphael died at his home in Philadelphia at the age of 51 on March 4. 1825. leaving to the world a legacy of beautiful paintings.
